They send them out via snail mail, on a nicely printed information sheet about the school. If you get one, it will automatically apply it online when you go to submit your application.thewarflamingo wrote:Does SMU usually offer merit based fee waivers?

Re: SMU 2011
I got mine shortly after the October LSAT results were released.
Expect one if you get 163-164 or better, unless they are really trying to bump medians.

Well I took the LSAT December 2009 so I doubt I'll get anything from them through CRS. Thanks for the info though!kalvano wrote:I got mine shortly after the October LSAT results were released.

So even though I was turned down via email, essentially, I could receive on in the mail?kalvano wrote:I got mine shortly after the October LSAT results were released.

Interesting, is your LSAT at or above median? In my email I requested to be considered for either merit or need based so I'll update y'all when I get a response from them.Tiva wrote:I emailed asking for a merit waiver and they extended me one.thewarflamingo wrote:Do you know when they usually start sending them out?kalvano wrote:They send them out via snail mail, on a nicely printed information sheet about the school. kalvano,
How many minorities, specifically AA males, are at SMU now? I'm thinking not that many, but I don't know. And for those who are there, do they seem comfortable or no?

Not many, maybe 3 or 4 in the 1L class. A few AA women, but again, not many. Obviously, there are more than that in the entire school, but I can't speak to the numbers total.
No one **seems** to care that much, though being an average white guy, I doubt I can really say much about that. I only noticed it at orientation with everyone together because of the obvious disparity.
Thirteen can hopefully chime in with some thoughts (or you can PM him), as he is probably more suited to answer the question of comfort level.
Also, in case he reads this, sorry I don't sit by you in Torts anymore, 13. I couldn't see the board that far back, and he writes a lot on the board. It's not because you smell funny or anything.

Update: SMU emailed me back this morning with a merit-based fee waiver code. So it's worth a shot to email and request one.

Its not that awkward for me, but I just dont think about it. I went to a pretty much all white UG though. SMU is pretty laid back if you are.cartercl wrote:kalvano,

My LSAT is way above median (175+) but my GPA is way below median (sub 3.0).thewarflamingo wrote: Interesting, is your LSAT at or above median? In my email I requested to be considered for either merit or need based so I'll update y'all when I get a response from them.

Grrrr.. we have similar stats and I didn't get one. I think I'm going to not apply to SMU afterall.

Yeah, my UG is in Louisiana (super conservative city) so I'm definitely used to being around mostly whites. I would prefer to be in a more liberal environment, but I understand that's probably not gonna happen at SMU. That's cool with me though.sophia.olive wrote:Its not that awkward for me, but I just dont think about it. I went to a pretty much all white UG though. Re: SMU 2011
What reason did they give for turning you down? I also noted in my email that I was a TX resident and they were my top choice so that might have helped, but they responded saying, "Congratulations on your outstanding LSAT score. Your fee waiver code is..." so I think it was strictly based on LSAT.Barbie wrote:thewarflamingo wrote:Update: SMU emailed me back this morning with a merit-based fee waiver code. I got a 168, lived in Texas, and had to ask for one.kalvano wrote:I got mine shortly after the October LSAT results were released.

I don't know if they sent any out automatically, but my LSAT was 161, I asked for one and they denied. I assume that you have to have a better LSAT to have them grant you one. I'll show those suckers in October. hahathewarflamingo wrote:What reason did they give for turning you down? I have a 163. So they're giving them out to 164+ apparently. I'm not paying $70 to apply to SMU. I was only applying at the chance of getting to follow around and bug Kal for a few years

No reason at all. Just said send us info if you need need-based one. The trimming of my LS app list ensues... hahathewarflamingo wrote:What reason did they give for turning you down? Re: SMU 2011
I've seen her list of schools. SMU places better than pretty much any school on her list that she has a reasonable shot at.
By all means, forgo that for $70.
