I'm inclined to agree that this is sort of an automated apology note..."But it certainly is not necessary to add anything and you should not interpret this email as a solicitation for more material. Indeed, because we make decision on a rolling basis, it is possible that we will send a decision to you before we receive and review any new submissions."

This would be the case if all people submitted around the same time get the same email. If some have been accepted and some have received this, then it isn't really just a "hey we are taking so long".

TBF, last we we did receive an apology letter for taking so long to get the checker, but that was a pure apology because everyone was waiting forever.

How many of the hold e-mail receivers wrote one of the optional essays?

Was it a generic or Michigan specific (i.e. Diversity statement or Why Mich)?

I did a diversity statement, but it was specifically in response to their diversity prompt and not my standard DS.

The outcomes I've seen this cycle tell me that this YP stuff is probably a lot of bullshit that we tell ourselves to feel better. Is it YP when you're above the 75th at UChicago, the #5 school? But somehow when you're a few spots down, it magically becomes YP. I really think a lot of these T14 schools are actually holistic and are looking for other things besides the raw numbers...

Yes it's still called yield protection - determining if someone will most likely be a good fit and/or attend. It's yield protection - through holistic means.

I just got one of these emails, I'm 3.8+ and 175+, and I wrote an additional essay describing what I want to do with my law degree and why I would be suited for it. I'm having a hard time understanding what this means. Thought it was an invitation to apply for a Darrow! Ha.

I got the email as well. I suspect it may be because I submitted my optional essay after submitting the rest of my app, so they put it in the back of the line. At least I hope it's that, because I really like Michigan.

12/15 here (11/18 submission) w no email. I think it's based on dates, not quality.

YP man (woman?), YP
If he took the time to write two extra essays, obviously he/she has an interest in going there. Not sure how they could YP under those conditions.
