Re: SMU 2011
This sums it up nicely, if SMU is your first choice, go for it, but if you really want a T14, with your LSAT, it's possible if you slow down and apply smartly (and early). SMU very well could be your first choice, it's your call.ebo wrote: I would kill for your LSAT + admissions chances at T14

Re: SMU 2011
Right, I appreciate the insight. I applied to a number of Tier 1 schools (UT, UVirginia, UCLA) that I could potentially see myself going to, but I really don't think I'd take admissions to one of those schools without decent financial aid over SMU. I don't think I'm going to get that with a sub-median, and in many cases sub 25% UGPA. I did get waitlisted at UT, UVA, but I didn't even follow up on the email, because I wouldn't want to pay sticker.ebo wrote:Sorry I was being a moron there for a second. Still, I think you should seriously consider waiting and reapplying next cycle to some higher ranked schools. SMU isn't going anywhere, but look at that graph you posted earlier- I don't know how accurate those figures are, but the fact remains that T14 grads are going to have considerably more lucrative options after graduation than us Ponies will, (EDIT: and JDs which are portable to legal job markets across the country) and you have a very good shot at being admitted to some of those schools.smithc2011 wrote:yeah it was a 25.5k scholarship, so overall cost of attendance is expected to be 35k-37k. Which I can't really imagine myself getting significantly more money than that, since I won't be bringing up my UGPA by much between now and the next cycle.bartleby wrote:hm...he's not going to SMU at sticker though - he mentioned he got the 25.5k. if he's set on tx, then i'd advise to just go to SMU. cause there's a good chance he's not getting into UT and people w/ sim. splitter stats got the 25.5 either way.
PS- Hope this doesnt come off as me lecturing you. I would kill for your LSAT + admissions chances at T14

In order to reserve your seat at SMU Dedman School of Law for the class entering in the
fall of 2011, you must pay an initial non-refundable deposit of $250 postmarked by April
1. A second non-refundable deposit of $150 must be postmarked by June 1. Checks
should be made payable to SMU Dedman School of Law and include the applicant’s
name or LSAC number on the memo line. Please send your deposits to SMU Dedman
School of Law, Office of Admissions, P.O. Box 750110, Dallas, Texas 75275-0110. Both
deposits may be paid by credit card at --LinkRemoved--. All deposits will be credited to your tuition
and fees account. Failure to meet either deposit deadline may result in the forfeiture of your
seat."

Are there many people still waiting? I applied in late November, was held for further review 1/27, and haven't heard anything since.

Re: SMU 2011
I went back through the thread and I wonder why most people were held 1/27 and only a couple of us were held on 1/31...hmmm...odd.

I applied with February LSAT scores, so app took a little longer to go complete. But, I was never "held" and have still yet to get a decision. Hmm.

Is that the preferred route? I was kinda considering calling admissions in the next few days to remind them I'm here. Too subtle?fathergoose wrote:Animal sacrifice. I think you are expecting too much. SMU is not particularly fast. Basically, they've been considering your application for about a month, which might as well be a day or two.

It worked for me, but if you aren't looking to personally spill blood you can go with a bucket of chicken a la Cerrano in Major Leagueavery87 wrote:Is that the preferred route? I was kinda considering calling admissions in the next few days to remind them I'm here. Too subtle?

I don't know if that would be good or bad for your chances though.

How is scholarship money affected if you accelerate from PT to FT hours? I know you still stay classifed as a PT student, but you can petition to take more hours than 11. Do you completely lose your money or is there some adjustment?

Who else is still wading in the 'Held for Further Review' Pool? I'm thinking we may need a support group.

Re: SMU 2011
I think it shows that there is still a significant part of the admissions process that is still under way and therefore a reasonable chance of being accepted (certainly not as good as earlier but not in panic mode either).
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
