Re: South Texas 2011
Thanks for all the great info you posted in this thread. I'm still trying to figure out who Prof. Browne-Barbour is as I saw you had no idea. What's the best method for getting old exams and outlines for specific profs or just old exams/outlines in general?Grad_Student wrote:Like I said, it's the CRAZIEST story I've heard happening at STCL and it was a semester before I even came.tex1010 wrote:Wow...That's a crazy story.

Re: South Texas 2011
Brown-Barbour is new this fall but looks like she came from Dusquene (too lazy to look up that spelling). As for outlines, http://www.40nations.com is the unofficial STCL forum/outline bank. The outlines are a bit old and most folks haven't been updating them. Depending the your professors, I can send you anything I have.tex1010 wrote:Thanks for all the great info you posted in this thread. GradStudent: How long do you typically wait before classes begin to order your books? Are the recommended books on the STCL online bookstore sufficient or should we be looking out for other supplements?

Re: South Texas 2011
I liked to save money and order early on Amazon but I've been burned a few times where the bookstore said we need 8th ed. but they fucked up and the prof wants to use the 9th ed. So take your chances there. If you know your schedule and the bookstore has a book list...order them now. I wouldn't do the thing where you order and they box them. It's a clusterfuck and they never do it correctly.Mce252 wrote:GradStudent: How long do you typically wait before classes begin to order your books? The recommended books are the correct list of books that the professors have requested. So you are good to go there.
Yes, you'll want supplements but I would wait awhile. Depending on your prof and class, you might want different kinds of supplements. For example, in K's, I used a crunchtime and was fine, while in Crim, I got the most massive Emmanuels I could find. Other classes, like CivPro and Prop I used E&Es. You can get them earlier in the semester but I also picked them up around Oct, about half way through the semester...I knew at that point whether I was understanding the material or was totally lost. Also, go to the bookstore and thumb through different publishers to see what you like, then order on Amazon...much cheaper.

Accepted off of the WL. No go for me. Will be attending SLU. Told them to take a fellow TLS.

Perfect. Thank you very much. This is a small chance, but in the case that I get taken off the waitlist at U of H, do you think many of my books will align with my classes over there?

How much do books and supplements actually cost? Their estimation is $1600 for the year. Is that accurate?

Re: South Texas 2011
Probably not, although some might. There are a ton of different books for each subject and it really depends on the professor. If you are holding out on UH, then just hold out on books for awhile.Mce252 wrote:Grad_Student wrote:I liked to save money and order early on Amazon but I've been burned a few times where the bookstore said we need 8th ed. but they fucked up and the prof wants to use the 9th ed. Umm, you know I can't really remember. You can find really good deals on used books on Amazon depending on the edition. I think $1600 is a bit high, I'm thinking between $500-$800...maybe even lower.kbarry wrote:How much do books and supplements actually cost? Their estimation is $1600 for the year. Is that accurate?
This is a new thing that started I think this past year so I didn't research it much. The only thing I would say is that you don't save too much money and you don't want to get boned on returning them if they are damaged. Law books aren't the best books that stand up to abuse. I generally had at least one book fall apart at the spine each semester and had to glue it back together.h0peful wrote:anyone have a strong opinion on renting vs. buying books?

Re: South Texas 2011
I know this is late, and I'm sure this question has been answered somewhere in the past 94 pages, but what forms do I need to complete for financial aid? I've only completed FASFA. I think there are two forms I need to fill out after FASFA. Do I need to be on Stanley first?
Btw, doing this so late bc I got in off the waitlist yesterday.
Thanks!

Re: South Texas 2011
You will need to complete the New Student application and TEG application. You can find those forms on the Financial Aid page on the STCL website. I would fax those to them ASAP. Unfortunately, they won't be able to do anything until your FASFA is processed. Once that is done and they have posted your award, you will need to decide which loans you will accept. You have to accept the loans on Stanley and send a MPN (Master Promissory Note) through studentloans.gov. It will also make you complete some loan counseling (30 minutes). The people in the Financial Aid office are really nice and helpful so don't hesitate to call and ask questions. They should have you on Stanley in the next day or two.benzarden wrote:I know this is late, and I'm sure this question has been answered somewhere in the past 94 pages, but what forms do I need to complete for financial aid? Re: South Texas 2011
@lucygirl- I drove by today and there is a guard shack with a guard watching the lot. I assume he would be there at night as well. But what is or is not safe is relative.
On an unrelated note, I am getting a 400 Error when I try to access my email. Anyone else having this problem?
And has anyone tried to use the discount for 24-hour fitness that is on Stanley? Do you need your Student ID first?

It's the parking garage I've parked in over 3 years and I've never had one run in with a homeless or crackhead. The pavillions 'mall' is Houston's attempt to bring people into downtown and as a result they are keeping it very very nice.lucygirl wrote:Does anyone know if parking in the pavillions garage is safe? i'll be going to school at night, and want to find the safest parking option available...
Like others said though, the meter only runs till 6 and after that it's free. So if you have class at 5:30, just pop a few quarters in and save a bunch of money.

Anyone have any information on who the Torts I professor will be for section D? The schedule says it will be Browne-Barbour, but Stanley does not list a professor at the moment.
Here is to hoping it is not Browne-Barbour based on her reviews at ratemyprofessor.com.

Looks like this will be her first year at STCL so she is probably not in the system yet. Definitely not the most flattering reviews.

What is recitation?
I was reading on ratemyprofessor.com that Kelso does his recitations in alphabetical order. I can almost guarantee 99.9% positive that I would be the first atleast in the part-timers group.

Re: South Texas 2011
When you get your first reading assignment you'll notice in the book there are only cases...no narrative passages about what the rule is or should be. Rather, it's case after case after case. These cases will lay out the facts, apply a rule and then apply the facts of that case to the rule of law. In recitation, the professor will call on a student to give the facts of the case and the rule of law. He'll ask a few questions of how the court came to their decision, what other cases have held and so forth.Kiwi3891 wrote:What is recitation?

Kelso is easy peasy. He'll ask for the facts and what the court held...that's it. He'll stare at the clock the entire time as well. You'll know when you are coming up.
Good luck.
