Same. Honestly thought this day would never come, so maybe I should be relieved. Just waiting for the Yale rejection now...HonestlyThough wrote:Just went DLS at Stanford

A slightly different take on this: I went to a fancy undergrad and *after* I got my 1st job, my employers never cared about that -- they cared about my experience and my performance. HOWEVER, the people who do care about that are the million strangers you meet in the course of doing business who have exactly 30, maybe 60 minutes to create an impression of you, and it's in those situations where a brand name degree, perhaps unfairly, impresses people and puts you in a certain mental box. (I will stipulate that I realize how obnoxious that sounds)GorillaWarfare wrote:Is it really a luxury though? Name recognition is a real thing and a lot of people I have spoken to reluctantly admit that what school you went do heavily contributes to the impression people have of you. The difference between Y/H/S and other top-tier schools might not be apparent right after graduation, when employment opportunities are great at all school. But what happens six years down the road, when you are fighting for a promotion or looking to transition to a new PA or firm?OneHandedEconomist wrote:We also have to address that a good amount of why we want to go to HYS is the luxury good of feeling prestigious.
I have to think the prestige counts for something significant, even if we can't put a dollar amount on it. This has certainly been the experience with my undergrad institution.

tried but the office closes for lunch. I'll give it another shot this afternoonnotsonotorious wrote:Sorry to hear thatHonestlyThough wrote:Just went DLS at Stanford

Now I'm intrigued -- what made a math PHD want to do public interest law?seeprybyrun wrote:Have a look at my LSN page. I gave some thoughts about that in a convo with HonestlyThough in the comments there.Rodgepwnd wrote:Sorry, unrelated question.
I was looking through your profile and thinking, how in the world did you get WL'ed from H and and all those other places? 4.0, 178 plus STEM Ph.D? I got into H with 174, 3.9 and little to no softs. You not getting in is making me rethink my views on this whole admission thing right now.
I think the "waiting for the current admits to accept the Rubenstein" one makes sense. Literally every Ruby I've spoken to at this point turned down Yale after admission.HonestlyThough wrote:Things have been silent for days. Any secret insights? theories? gut instincts? psychic revelations?

Though, as a side note, that doesn't do much to explain why an unusually large chunk of march completes (compared to other months) haven't heard anything
I'd cry of joy. Also, the fact that Asha is always tweeting about how Y is fighting the good fight against Trump and other bs makes waiting easier.seeprybyrun wrote:Because we're all getting a super secret surprise admission with a bow on top!HonestlyThough wrote:Ha yes, please go elsewhere, y'all.notsonotorious wrote:Perfect! I wondered about that too and hoped my app didn't come off as reactionary given that I was involved in the campaign and basically wrote my PS about privilege. to be fair, I lsated in sept so hopefully it's obvious i was already planning to goOneHandedEconomist wrote:I wonder how drastically their app pool changed mid-November.notsonotorious wrote:I know. I had a funny convo with my Columbia interviewer. She asked me what my career plans were, and I mentioned the possibility of working in a government job. She responded, "Well, that's if there are any of those left when you graduate, but I guess we might have someone else in office by then."HonestlyThough wrote:I wondered about that too and hoped my app didn't come off as reactionary given that I was involved in the campaign and basically wrote my PS about privilege. to be fair, I lsated in sept so hopefully it's obvious i was already planning to goOneHandedEconomist wrote:

Yeah, I love that politics are no longer a no-go cause all of these schools kinda assume where you fall/are unapologetic about where they fall. I've talked to a lot of interviewers/admissions people about it. no one feigns neutrality at allseeprybyrun wrote:I had a funny convo with my Columbia interviewer. Personally I'm not a fan of that at all. It's super unprofessional IMO.HonestlyThough wrote:Yeah, I love that politics are no longer a no-go cause all of these schools kinda assume where you fall/are unapologetic about where they fall. Honestly, not really IMO. A ton of lawyers will be in politics. I'm curious about how much of this matters past HYS? I was deciding between mostly t13 - uchicago, duke, and cornell being my top all depending on $$. Though Chicago is definitely the most "prestigious" out of my options, in term of layman's prestige and prestige in terms of other fields, I feel like ivies > Chicago/NYU > public (Berkeley, Michigan, etc.) I definitely want to stay in NY and a lawyer who went to Yale told me I'd be silly to go to pay more to go to Chicago or Michigan or duke over Cornell, and that the only schools that is "arguably" worth more is Yale (though I'm sure he was just a little biased..)notsonotorious wrote:A slightly different take on this: I went to a fancy undergrad and *after* I got my 1st job, my employers never cared about that -- they cared about my experience and my performance.
