Looks we're on the exact same timeline (including being out of town this coming weekend... weird). It's insane how much time I've spent "writing" this PS..

So yes, good luck to both of us!

IMO, you should be good.

Also, (probably stupid, insecure) question for the crowd: for those who have gotten acceptances already, and are getting emails from people at the LS... are you replying/engaging with these people? Like, will I appear unspeakably rude if I'm not? I've gotten an email from someone who heads a specialized program I was admitted to, and one from a 1L.

I kind of have the same question. I really appreciate the email, but I dont really have a question and dont feel like engaging in a long back-and-forth, but I also dont want to be rude.

Yeah, I've done various Skype interviews with just the mac webcam and it's always worked well.

dude, you gotta respond. At least thank them for writing and come up with a simple question about whether they like the program, or tell them it's a crazy time at work right now but you'd love to be able to get in touch with them in a few months when you're making your LS decision. It takes no time at all and it's definitely rude to not even acknowledge the email imo. /0L speculation

Yeah... I dont know... I just get paranoid that the schools will ID me and track me on lsn and this site. I had my lsn account hidden for a while, and I wouldn't be surprised if people are waiting to share info to avoid being identified.

On the other hand, it's so much fun to share/obsess with people in the same boat who understand.

Everything seems super dead but I haven't been around before so I have no idea if this is normal. Hoping it's just because it's the beginning of the cycle and maybe the ball will get rolling more in Nov/Dec.

I can apply to GWU, NU (and of course, my one true love, GULC) with just the one from my boss. It should be a good one - particularly since I'm helping him write it. My concern is that not having an academic one will really hurt me, and given what an absolute shitshow my GPA is, I need all the help I can get.

On a scale of one to GULC-at-sticker, how fucked am I?
How long have you been out of school?
3 years.
Here's the issue: the people reading the letters are academics, they speak a certain language and want letters from people who think like them and have made the same (ish) life choices. My gut feeling is that the biggest barrier to not having academic LORs is that they won't have the same visceral impact if written at the same level of praise as an academic LOR.

Speaking from personal experience from within the ivory tower, I can say that if I see anything written by an academic, I immediately google them to get a sense of their prestige and how much weight I can give their opinion. With industry folks, I don't have a sense of how high I should rate their opinion and most of what they've done isn't in the public realm. It's just a cultural barrier, and one your LOR writers will have to overcome.

Overall, I'd say if you can get glowing LOR out of industry, it'll only hurt a bit. Hopefully not too much to sway a decision one way or another.

On a scale of 1 to GULC at sticker, I don't think you're quite at the GWU with a 5K/yr scholly, but I would strongly recommend getting an academic letter, irrespective of whether it's gonna be middling/vacuous.

I'd say no academic LOR is a -2 modifier, leaving you with your GPA (contentless without knowing school's average GPA) in the range of 7. Hooray for unreferenced scales!
