Not admitted to Columbia, but for NYU's ASW I'm staying at a hostel for $45/night. Saves a bunch of money, but it's basically like living in a dorm. Regarding security, I've felt very safe in every hostel I've stayed at, but this is my first time staying at one in a city, so I'm not 100% sure.

ETA: I have a private room, which is unusual for a Hostel.

ETA again: Actually my room is $63 per night after tax. If you and a friend got a shared room (meaning with other people) it would be $39 + tax = $46 or so per person per night. There are other cheaper hostels but they seem sketchy and are farther away.

apologies if my post seemed rude. that was absolutely not my intent. (i'm very much hoping to join the ASW conversation shortly!) i just thought it might be easier for everyone to track the information that is relevant to them if we separated into two threads.

The Priceline bargains are all on the the East side, near the UN. Not a great spot for getting around, especially to Columbia, but if you don't want to pay ridiculous prices that's the place to go.

You can catch the 7 to columbus and just pop north on the B or D from the UN..

You can't take the BD to Columbia. You'd have to transfer again at 59th street and then take the 1 all the way up, so that's three transfers AND you're taking the 1 the whole way up from Midtown which is slow. West side is better.

Edit: the bitchiness in this post is meant to be directed at the fact that getting to the east side from Morningside Heights was the worst thing ever for several years of my life.

On some level I agree with you but I'd rather keep it to one thread because this site doesn't get a ton of traffic anyway and it's good to have admits around to answer when they went complete, how long to get accepted, those types of questions. Basically just one thread to reference rather than multiple.

NYCer here: subway system is really easy. You could get a hotel in Brooklyn and it would still be easy. To be fair, I don't really know how ASW's work. So if it's like a convention, where you're constantly going back to your room and going out again, I would get on the west side near the 1 line. The 1 line will take you everywhere you need to go. But I would choose on price rather than proximity because transferring is so easy--again, unless it's like a convention.

Yeah the only reason to take the d is it can get you from 59 to 125 in 5 minutes. It's not in the nicest neighborhood and its a bit of an uphill trek to campus once you get there.

The walk from 125 is no more dangerous than the walk from 116 on the B. I wouldn't recommend either to out-of-towners, but only because when you are visiting you want to keep it as simple as possible. Take the 1 to 116 and you're there.

The only "uncomfortable" thing is seeing a few discount grocery stores, NYCHA towers and brown faces, but there is a big difference between a diverse neighborhood and a dangerous one.

I'm currently at columbia. Of course you take the 1 if it is an option. I was responding to the statement that you can't take the b or d there. For someone staying in a hotel away from campus, an alternative might make sense. For daily use, the 1 is the only way to go.

Also - I'd like to reiterate the 1, NOT the 2 or 3. And take buses. I <3 crosstown buses.
