Re: Harvard c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 Cycle)
Just finished my interview with Lauren.
Was anyone else's interview incredibly short? My interview started a couple of minutes late (perhaps a small factor) and was definitely around 10 minutes, maybe 11. Makes me concerned. Right at the beginning of the interview she said something like "this is going to go by pretty fast, we only have about 15 minutes".
Questions:
-Tell me about what you are most proud of
-If you could go back in time and change one decision during your undergrad, what would it be -(follow ups for the details)
-Questions about some specific resume stuff (how did this influence your choice to go to law school?)
-Why do you want to go to law school directly out of undergrad?
-Is there anything you want to do in your last few months of undergrad to feel like you've fully experienced college?
-Do you have any questions for me?
It was pretty pleasant, but I was just surprised when I looked at the time afterwards and realized that it was so short!
Also, does not getting JS have any bearing on the likelihood of a positive decision?
I'm never going to stop obsessing about this.
EDIT: Forgot one question: -Where do you see yourself in terms of your career right after graduation + where do you see yourself in 30 years?

Definitely not. They do over a thousand interviews, they have to share the load.Orion311 wrote:

Adding to this. I read in their blog that they make an effort to evenly distribute the interview load so that each interviewer has an unbiased view of the candidate field. So JS doesn't take all of the best candidates.LetsGoMets wrote:Definitely not. They do over a thousand interviews, they have to share the load.Orion311 wrote:

I gather there is a fair amount of “hypothesizing” out there about this point, so let me say it again. Interviewer assignment is random. We do this for the same reason we randomize file reads—it helps every interviewer have a better sense of the full pool. Regardless of whether you interview with me, Danielle, Lauren, Anne, or Nefyn, keep in mind that while the interview is meant to be conversational, our goal is to learn more about you; the interview is not just a “formality.”

I wouldn't be concerned about the short interview. They have to do several of them back to back, so my guess is they probably just needed to end it early to get ready for the next interviewee.Orion311 wrote:Just finished my interview with Lauren.

Re: Harvard c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 Cycle)
I just realized you may be asking a different question. Not whether getting JS as an interviewer is random or not, rather - if you do have JS, does this impact your chances. If interviews are randomly assigned like it is stated they are, does JS or any of the admissions officers then have a higher rate of acceptance post-JS1? (Candidate X and Y have the same stats, and are randomly assigned interviewers. X has JS and Y has someone else. Does this mean X has a better shot at admissions than Y if they had the same interviews?) That's an interesting question. I would hope that it doesn't matter and I'm sure they try their best to be impartial. There's probably no difference. But at the same time everyone is human and it's intriguing to think about.Orion311 wrote:Also, does not getting JS have any bearing on the likelihood of a positive decision?

Lol I'd be thrilled (and shocked) just to get a JS1.psychmusic wrote:What happens if one of you gets a JS2 before the task is complete- somehow I don't see you sifting through your final 50 pages of the c/o 2017 thread instead of celebrating.
Also, last year's applicants continued their creative traditions with quite a few Christmas carol variations of "all I want is a JS2."

At one point I was going to work out a parody of Nelly's "Air Force Ones" with "JS1", but I never made it past the conception stage.jemthey17 wrote:Wow, we are so boring this year.Beanie14 wrote:Lol I'd be thrilled (and shocked) just to get a JS1.psychmusic wrote:What happens if one of you gets a JS2 before the task is complete- somehow I don't see you sifting through your final 50 pages of the c/o 2017 thread instead of celebrating.

Mine is short as well, around 13 minutes, and I got the same "this is going to go by pretty fast" thing in the beginning.

I am definitely overthinking...LetsGoMets wrote:He said nice things and you're concerned about that?2666 wrote:Ugh I just can't stop ruminating over my interview. So to all of you who have already completed the JS1, did your interviewer comment on your application? Mine gave me two rather positive comments during the interview but I don't know if he was merely being polite.

Popping to say that interviewer selection really is random and doesn't have bearing on likelihood/speed of JS2. Neither does length of interview. I had mine with Danielle Early and it was also quite short (about 12 minutes long?).
I also really, really hope more JS2s go out today or tomorrow. Good luck to all those waiting!

did you know guys who your interviewers were beforehand?
I also wonder if there are more js1s being given out this year vs. previous years.

Why's that? It doesn't really seem like there have been any signs of this, if anything I think it seems like they've been very selective with early JS1 waves.lawschoolplease1 wrote:did you know guys who your interviewers were beforehand?

Do you guys think the applicant pool is stronger or weaker this year? That might be why so many schools are taking their time, and I'm wondering if it bodes well for me or not.

Weaker -- at least, fewer high scorers. At least in terms of LSAT scores, weaker most definitely.ravel wrote:Do you guys think the applicant pool is stronger or weaker this year? That might be why so many schools are taking their time, and I'm wondering if it bodes well for me or not.
Stanford seems to be taking their time because they are understaffed rather than concerns about the pool. I would say that Harvard knew they were changing their speed/process way earlier this year (like back in November when I interviewed) but whether that was pre-planned or a decision made in light of the decreased quality of the initial app pool it's hard to say. YLS has been moving as normal.
