I got this before I received my admissions packet as well. In fact, I still haven't received my NCE. However, I called admissions and they confirmed that I have indeed been admitted. I am sure you are in the same boat!
Congratulations!
Awesome!!! Thank you so much for allaying my fears! And congrats to you too.

If enough of us do it, they won't think we're scamming them!

I got that email as well, and totally thought it was a fluke.
but then I had the letter in the mailbox when I checked it!
So it probably means you have been admitted and your admissions letter is just in the mail

Yeah, but some don't require your parents' info, and I think Columbia does.

Yeah, but some don't require your parents' info, and I think Columbia does.
also most schools require actual returns mailed to them AFTER you are granted need-based aid to confirm. Columbia and Cornell are the only schools i can think of that require it by March 1st, as part OF the application.

After all these days spent sitting idly at my mailbox, Columbia sent me an email today requesting an updated transcript. LSAC has been processing this damn transcript for over a week now
I guess I don't have to worry about anything coming in the mail for a while

Really. I feel like you could fail an entire semester and still have numbers more than good enough for CLS...

Thanks for the confidence. I was kind of surprised, but my GPA is also my weak spot.
Has anybody had a situation like this and received significant money?

I was in the situation - my GPA was my weak spot and they asked for an updated transcript. They don't prefer an LSAC transcript; if you can send them an unofficial through email, they will take it. I was accepted and haven't received any money.

Booked my flight. if I'm going to the ASW for Columbia & NYU where should I try to get a hotel? (ideally cheap & between the two). Priceline makes it look like East Manhattan will be the cheapest in close proximity. Is that okay?
(I'm from Houston & will be a chick staying alone. I'm cautious, but staying someplace super sketch is probably not the best idea).

All of Manhattan is pretty safe so I wouldn't worry about that. It doesn't take that long to get from NYU to Columbia (and back) on the subway so I would just stay wherever in Manhattan you feel like you're getting the best quality/location for your dollar. I would think there would be reasonably priced hotels/hostels on the Upper West Side/Harlem but I'm not totally sure. I would also check to see if there is a subway line near your hotel that will allow you to get to both NYU and Columbia without too much of a hassle. You might be better off staying on the west side of Manhattan since both NYU and Columbia are on the west side but it really just depends on whether your hotel is conveniently located on a subway line that services both NYU and Columbia.

+1
East side of Manhattan isn't sketchy, but subway lines are mostly north-south so you might end up taking three lines instead of one. Midtown West area has lots of hotels and is between the two schools on the 1/2/3 Broadway corridor.

The Priceline bargains are all on the the East side, near the UN. Not a great spot for getting around, especially to Columbia, but if you don't want to pay ridiculous prices that's the place to go.

Check out Yotel in Midtown west. Also, for the super shoe-string, there is a hostel on 104 and Amsterdam. But I second what another said: Manhattan is tiny, stay where you can afford and don't worry about getting around. Columbia and NYU are both very accessible.

Don't know about NYU but Columbia posted a list of students who'd be willing to house people as well as field questions (available via both the admitted students' website and the ASHandbook). NYU might have something similar.
If you're looking for free housing with (presumably) no bed bugs, it might be worth looking into. There were a good number of willing students, plenty of them female the last time I checked. It might cut down on the number of nights spent in a hotel, at the very least!

all of these suggestions that people have given are good.
one more suggestion is to browse travelzoo top 20 deals for NYC. there are OFTEN deals for midtown hotels in times square for like 100 bucks a night. i think it'd be a cool experience to do that. the hotels are nice and the experience definitely makes up for the cost..

There's an international youth hostel a few blocks from Columbia, on Amsterdam Avenue. I've never been inside, but every time I walk by there are large numbers of wholesome-looking people happily coming and going, so it's probably not a total dungeon.
Also w/r/t bedbugs: I haven't done any research on bedbugs in NYC recently, though they haven't been in the news for a while -- but it seems that even nice hotels aren't immune. Not to freak you out, but the point is I'm not sure price of accommodation can always be used as a sure-fire indicator of being bedbug-free.

AirBnB is totally awesome, but unfortunately it's illegal in NYC (counts as running an illegal hotel, apparently). This leads some very shady operators to get involved -- I've heard nightmare stories about bait-and-switch schemes.
