benwyatt wrote: Your healthcare vs gun carrying analogy is pretty faulty as well. At some point, everyone is going to need healthcare. There's no arguing that. I don't think you can make a similar argument that at some point everyone is going to need a gun. I'll concede that my line of reasoning isn't necessarily one to generalize from, but your analogy isn't any stronger.

People do choose to carry illegally all the time, yes, but few places search you as often as NYC does or are likely to be quite as strict about it. This city does not play around when it comes to these things. (Forgive the Fox News link, it was the first one that came up)

Regarding point two, I have no issue with responsible people carrying, but at the end of the day the average person in NYC just flat out is not allowed to.

As far as point 3 goes, yes, worse things do happen, but in New York you are statistically far more likely to have someone steal your cell phone than to have someone shoot you and that was the point I was making.
I knew that as I was typing it, but the point I was trying to make is that just because you haven't had a need for something to date does not mean you can discount it entirely. At the end of the day, I agree that your experience with being a victim will probably consist of getting your phone snatched or your car window broken in and the best thing to do is to practice good judgement and not put yourself into bad situations to begin with. While I think outlawing concealed carry is misguided, it is also way too easy to get it in other states.

basedvulpes wrote:I'm not sure why this is all going down in the NYU thread but who am I to say no to a lively discussion.

I'm curious about who here:

1. Owns a gun?
2. Whether it is for hunting/recreation/protection/other?
3. Whether you've been trained and certified on handling and operating said gun?
4. What part of the country are you from and is it rural/suburban/urban?

For myself:

1. Yes, I own a gun
2. Hunting
3. Yes
4. I'm from rural Maine, and my guns will be staying in rural Maine unless I move somewhere equally rural (unlikely)

I figured that not many people had ever owned or handled guns, but since going to college I've also tended to associate with people from places where guns are viewed very, very negatively.
Nice try, federal government.
