Re: Santa Clara c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014)
Applied 1/27/2014
In Committee 2/4/2014
Admitted today 4/4/2014
For those of you who are still waiting for a reply, here's what I've heard from asking someone who knows an undergrad professor there. She asked and it turns out SCU didn't start reviewing the bulk of the February and after applications until last week. So the good news could still come! Hopefully that will calm some nerves. Now I'm waiting for the financial package to come and see where I stand on things.
My first waive deposit deadline is 5/1. Is that the date for everyone as well?

My schools gave me a 4/15 date for deposit in general. Scholarships are going to be stingy. Most of us who exceeded the stats got average of 15k to 20k per year with 3.0 stip. Retention rate is disastorous.

Dang. I'll have to first see what my scholly package is. Probably find out next week. I live in Santa Clara so it won't take long to get to me. So none of you guys negotiated successfully? My stats are 75%ile lsat and between 50-75%ile gpa. not lookin too good for me ...
but either way, it's close to home, and I'm pretty much locked into patent prosecution. And I'm sure they'll have that in mind when I request a scholly bump.

They don't negotiate. We all tried. I'm 50-75th for LSAT and way above 75th for GPA. I assume you know you need a science background for patent yes?cherrytee wrote:Dang. IP fellowship potentially but nothing more than that. They want really high stats for the fellowships though.

I wouldn't worry too much. I e-mailed them this week and got the following response:jstellini wrote:wonder what it mans for me. in committee since 12/2 still absolutely nothing
Based on cherrytee's post, the reason that it's taking so long for decisions to be rendered is due to the fact they started reviewing applications later than expected.Hello Jake,
Thank you for your email. We are hoping to get out a large number of decisions in the next few weeks, but it could be the end of April before we are completely finished.

And that the first wave of deposits is due 4/15 so they'll know how many have committed at that point.jj1990 wrote:I wouldn't worry too much. I e-mailed them this week and got the following response:jstellini wrote:wonder what it mans for me. in committee since 12/2 still absolutely nothing

Sounds like I shouldn't expect to eke out any more money than the $20k they offered?

Dont count on it. Im not sure if theylll offer more after the deadline if you don't deposit. I heard in the past that has happened for some people but I woldn't gamble on it if you really want to be at santa claraDerekZoolander wrote:Sounds like I shouldn't expect to eke out any more money than the $20k they offered?

FYI, I tried to negotiate the stip on a 30k/yr offer and Hinkle didn't even respond. I was very considerate and simply brought up the fact that over half of recipients lose their scholarships every year. Withdrawing this weekend, did not have a good experience with SC admissions.

You won't hear back unless you keep pressing for it via email or call. They didn't get back to my letter for over a month. Then they said no to me as well as my friends. The only way, we'd consider going is if they offer us full rides at this point. or something close. But anyway. Do you have other options for schools? SCU doesn't place well. I assume you have a science degree if you want to do IP and do well in that field?

"If we could make our decision over again, we would only consider going if they offered full rides"?
I thought you were a current student at SCL

No. I'm saying the only way we would go is if we were offered full rides. I'm talking about the present. We're all applicants who are admitted to multiple schools. I committed to Hastings and so did my friends.DerekZoolander wrote:

Just got my scholly package.
$20,000/yr with 3.0 stip.
160/3.27
With all those unsuccessful negotiations and all, I guess I will assume this is it for me.

Safe to assume until after the 1st deposit deadline. They may give more at that point in time.cherrytee wrote:Just got my scholly package.

I understand now. Why are you preferring Hastings, if you don't mind me asking? I'm waitlisted and debating whether to try and get in.Moonlight wrote:No. I'm saying the only way we would go is if we were offered full rides. I'm talking about the present. It's better than SCU. From the shallow point, its better ranking wise. Alumni base wise its stronger. Reputation wise its stronger. Even though it faces a harsh employment stat, it still is stronger than SCU. It also doesn't have the engineer revolving door concern that I constantly have. It also gave all of us better scholarships. It has a great tax and litigation program amongst others. And larger OCI.DerekZoolander wrote:I understand now. Why do you prefer SCU? Are you committing to them? Who are you committing to while you wait for Hastings WL?

Two similar schools in LA area and two in NYC. Pepperdine, Loyola, Brooklyn, and Cardozo.Moonlight wrote:It's better than SCU. From the shallow point, its better ranking wise. Looked to me like Hastings barely gives out a dime in scholarship money, so I guess I'm assuming I won't receive any.

So you're committing to which one of those schools? Or are you committing to SCU? What did you get from other schools?DerekZoolander wrote: Two similar schools in LA area and two in NYC. Pepperdine, Loyola, Brooklyn, and Cardozo.

Hastings wasn't the most generous but it wasn't bad to be honest compared to what SCU gave.

All of them are in the $15k - $28k range. SCU is $20k. I'm going to deposit at all of them but SCU and see if I still want to at SCU when it's deadline time at the end of the month.Moonlight wrote:So you're committing to which one of those schools?
