All you people who got into H or S and are considering not applying to Yale because you feel like you "don't have a chance" or "the app isn't worth it" are insane. Anyone with a 3.8/170+ who doesn't throw a hundred bucks at a wall to try to get in here is insane. Yes, the acceptance rate is low, but you never know what random thing will make the professors reading your app decide to take you. Not all of my classmates are rocket scientists and senior administration officials guys.

Yale has a clear edge over Harvard for academia and clerkship, but does the advantage also extend to biglaw placement?

Re: Yale c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014 cycle)
More firms come to interview at our OCI than there are students who participate. Unless you bid like a moron or have terrible social skills, you shouldn't strike out. Any advantage over Harvard in terms of biglaw has more to do with how few Yale students there are for the same number of available jobs from the firms than anything institution related.heythatslife wrote:To Cicero76 or anyone who can provide an answer:Cicero76 wrote:All you people who got into H or S and are considering not applying to Yale because you feel like you "don't have a chance" or "the app isn't worth it" are insane. I had a cohesive application narrative, but not any 'super softs.' My only standout soft was over-the-top letters of recommendation. Couldn't agree more. Non-numerical factors matter enough here that things like an outstanding PS or really strong LORs can make a significant positive difference.Cicero76 wrote:All you people who got into H or S and are considering not applying to Yale because you feel like you "don't have a chance" or "the app isn't worth it" are insane. The bottom of the class at Harvard is still a dicey place to be. But I know several people with straight Ps who got multiple offers at FIP (our OCI). Like Cicero said, if you don't generally make people uncomfortable when you speak to them and you don't bid idiotically, you should have BigLaw options regardless of your grades.heythatslife wrote:To Cicero76 or anyone who can provide an answer:Cicero76 wrote:All you people who got into H or S and are considering not applying to Yale because you feel like you "don't have a chance" or "the app isn't worth it" are insane. Submitted today! It took me a while to write my Yale-250 but now I am done with applications... So when should we expect to hear back? March?

I've now submitted all my applications except Yale. I guess I'm out of excuses; time to write the 250....

Yale credibly claims that it doesn't affect your application to apply later in the cycle.luckystar84 wrote:so if it's all the same today, then I shouldn't rush to submit this weekend and instead take the xmas break to write my 250?
I've been thinking that if I get my app in this weekend, then i'll be forwarded to faculty review before xmas, and I'd imagine most faculty read apps on 12/28 or w.e.
so no don't do that, don't write in this weekend when some imbibing has happened, and wait til xmas break?
There's a very small chance for early applicants to hear earlier. But I think basically everyone hears at the same point anyways.

Yeah, with Yale submit when your App is strongest. Applying a little earlier doesn't increase your chances of admission and there is no guarantee you will hear back any sooner. So take your time and blow their minds.luckystar84 wrote:lol my post made no sense.
i meant to say "if it's all the same to them...don't submit this weekend?"
so don't?

Re: Yale c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014 cycle)
I have been thinking about it a lot lately, I think the initial shock of getting into HLS when I wasn't expecting to really threw my focus, but I am positive that if I got into Yale I would go. In my mind Yale is almost to Harvard what Harvard is to CCN.
That being said, I don't expect to get into Yale but I just felt the need to say it (or to post it I guess).
Have a great weekend everyone.

I think the difference between Yale and Harvard is small enough that differences in academic programs, campus culture, location, etc should weigh heavily into your consideration. This would especially be the case if you are looking at a joint degree (especially JD/MBA, JD/PHD). There are a lot more people that choose Harvard over Yale than any individual CCN over Harvard, so I think the comparison might be farther off than you speculated. Anyway, congrats on your acceptance into Harvard and I'm sure you are a very competitive candidate for Yale!

Re: Yale c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014 cycle)
Thanks, but i'm really not competative for Yale at all. I wasn't speculating just saying that for me Yale is a significantly better fit as I hope to go into academia eventually. But you are right, I think I overstated my position. I am beyond thrilled to be in at Harvard and will be very happy there. I will still have the opportunities to work in government and then find work in the academic field, the path just won't be as clear (though nearly so).jdapplicant wrote: I think the difference between Yale and Harvard is small enough that differences in academic programs, campus culture, location, etc should weigh heavily into your consideration. Re: Yale c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014 cycle)
Really?? With only 30 or 40 people turning Yale down every year, that seems really surprising, no? I would think that many more would take a Hamilton or Ruby over Harvard, but I could be overestimating the number of H/R given out each year. I had the same ranking in mind as Specs.jdapplicant wrote: I think the difference between Yale and Harvard is small enough that differences in academic programs, campus culture, location, etc should weigh heavily into your consideration. This is mathematically improbable. I would in fact dare say it's mathematically impossible.jdapplicant wrote:The-Specs wrote:I have been thinking about it a lot lately, I think the initial shock of getting into HLS when I wasn't expecting to really threw my focus, but I am positive that if I got into Yale I would go.
