I did. I am waiting to hear from other schools and did not want to possibly lose the scholarship. USD remains a real possibility for me. Worst case, I'm out $300.

No. But I tried to negotiate up from 60k and they weren't playing ball. Ran the numbers and I'd have to take 130k out in loans, which isn't so awesome.CO2016YEAH wrote:Interesting. Whysy, Uncle, NBA, have you all decided yet where you will be attending?

I'm in at LLS, but they haven't offered me anything, hoping they're willing to negotiate... I'd be able to live at home and save the col. Would've loved to go back to san diego, but the COL is so high, the scholarship they offered me wouldn't have made a difference. Do you know where you're going yet?CO2016YEAH wrote:Interesting. Also trying to negotiate with LLS. Would be able to live with SO. They said they will get back to everybody trying to negotiate by deadline time (4/30)whsy wrote:I'm in at LLS, but they haven't offered me anything, hoping they're willing to negotiate... Still unsure. Looking like it might be LLS with 90. I could be easily swayed to USD if they'd hook it up, though.whsy wrote:I'm in at LLS, but they haven't offered me anything, hoping they're willing to negotiate... Alternatively, if UNLV can really come through with a good scholly I might go to save on COL. They've given a small offer, but it needs to be bigger and without stips.

Thanks for both people's advice! So since I only have a full 48 hours... what would a doable itinerary be? Does the zoo take the whole day? I heard it is huge... I wanted to do the safari version and was considering getting a Go San Diego Card.whsy wrote:there's gaslamp district, seaport village, downtown La Jolla, balboa park, beaches, coronado island

I sent mine in and heading down in May to check it out. I'm on the other coast so I can't make any visits any earlier. More money would be nice but living in San Diego with only positives I've heard about USD makes it worth it! Now to figure out living situation.CO2016YEAH wrote:Have any of you with schollies submitted your seat deposits?

+1. Considering my only other alternative right now is USF, I don't want to lose that $20k. Which might go up, if all you folks are pulling out?Jeebs wrote:CO2016YEAH wrote:Have any of you with schollies submitted your seat deposits?

Hi All,
I literally made my account for this website just now, actually haven't done much reading on this site (SO MUCH NEGATIVITY!?!) but did read this whole thread, happy to say seems like no d-bags on the USD thread!!!!
Anyways....I'm here because, well, its decision time and I'm stuck between USD and UC Hastings (wait listed at Davis...). Truth be told I LOVE USD...love love love. I love San Diego, I went to UC San Diego for undergrad, I love living there, I love life there, I moved to LA for a law firm job after graduating in 2011 and HATE living in LA (got into LLS but so over LA that I didn't even care).
SD is the city I love and the school has everything I want academically, and yes I would be perfectly happy staying there for the rest of my life. UC Hastings, on the other hand, is in SF which I know LOTS of people love, but I am just not sold on it? Am I crazy? People on here talk about how expensive COL is in SD, but compared to LA and SF it's DIRT AZZ CHEAP!
I know Hastings is a great school, but I'm not sold on living/life in SF, I know its not LA but I'm over the hustle and bustle. There's a certain mental peace that I find in San Diego that I think would be beneficial in law school.....Plus, seriously I really don't like the idea of living in a SMALL old apartment in SF that I pay $1200/month for to SHARE in an area where you "just have to keep your phone in a zipped pocket with your pepper spray in hand and you'll be just fine!"
So, it sounds like I'm decided right? My heart is leaning for SD. BUT....there's just one problem, right now USD is giving me $10K for the first year (JUST THE FIRST YEAR) and UC Hastings (ranked 20 spots higher) is giving me $14,500 for the 1st year and they say most people get the same grants 2L and 3L, sometimes even more.......*sigh*
Classic battle of heart and head....thoughts? My numbers are 3.7 from UCSD/156 on the LSAT (death of me). But I happen to think all my "softs" were actually pretty solid.
OBVIOUSLY need to negotiate with USD (again....originally I was getting nada) but is there any hope for more fin aid based off what Hastings is giving me? When I originally negotiated I didnt have $ from Hastings yet...so that's a new tool in my tool belt but I'm still nervous but obviously going to go for it...
Thoughts in general will be appreciated as long as you aren't super harsh or anything.

Negotiate with SD for more aid, and withdraw from Hastings so I can have your spot. Then I'll withdraw from USD and maybe you'll get some of my money. Is your USD scholly not renewable? Maybe ask for a renewable stip and suggest your own condition, like 3.2<.
I thought Hastings only gave out loans? Wouldn't you also be eligible for financial assistance/FAFSA at USD?

there defiantly is a lot of negativity on tls. Im not sure being ranked 20 spots higher will me all that much if you are unhappy. I would say be carefull counting on getting scholarship and grants for the 2l or 3l. Look and see what percentage of people keep their money. A lot of people lose it.laytay wrote:Hi All,

68 or 48 there is alot of movement year to year. SD is cheaper. A lot of us are in the same boat as you right now. Just try to keep your head up. Just my opinion.

I'm meeting with a Davis admissions person tomorrow morning, then I'll be writing my email to USD.onionskin wrote:Negotiate with SD for more aid, and withdraw from Hastings so I can have your spot. Hastings gives out a ton of grants (mostly grants, actually). 88% of students get grants and the median is $13K. They are mostly need based which pisses some people off, but as a financial aid officer who did a workshop at an LSAC Forum said "you're all equally poor in our eyes" Hastings still has some (like a handful) of merit awards, but they said at the admit day yesterday that none of those have been decided yet (weird) and I couldn't get a clear answer from the dude in charge of those when they DO decide (not that I expect to get one, I just like full disclosure, I don't get why they are holding onto potentially super powerful $ offers?).
Yes I also got loans from both UC Hastings and USD, full $20.5 K unsubsized and remaining in Grad Plus, not focused on those right now, just focusing on upping the freeeeee money

Yes the 10K I have right now from USD is not renewable, $10K one time and thats it.....

I will happily withdraw from one when I finally decide the other...trust me I don't enjoy hanging in limbo like this, I have already withdrawn elsewhere.

I agree that happiness is huge, its just that I am unsure about SF. I know I would be happy back in SD but I can't say for sure anything about SF one way or the other because I just haven't ever lived there, so that would be a gamble.mewalke1 wrote:there defiantly is a lot of negativity on tls. As for the rankings deal, I just know that when I tell people, something about Hastings its like OH WOW HASTINGS, I think that's because it used to be ranked top 20, back in like the 90s......but yeah, for the most part when I tell people "I'm Hastings vs. USD at this point" they look at me like "why is that even a decision? why is USD even still in the mix?" And I explain "Well, I like living there....I'm happy there" and they look at me like I cant possibly be serious to give up Hastings for USD, and they dont even know the $ situation.....so its just hard to justify to other people, even though I know that shouldnt matter. And I know rankings shouldnt matter but for whatever reason in the law world, they REALLY do, and it sucks but that is the reality.
As for the Hastings $ its almost all need based, not merit based which is why most people get a chunk of $ around $13-15K but almost no one gets full or even half rides, and assuming I dont inherit a large sum of money anytime soon that wouldnt change my FAFSA which is how they determine their grants year to year.
