there is very limited graduate housing. People live all over but a lot live in orange/anaheim/santa ana–not too far. a few commute from as far as LA.conroyc wrote:Does anyone know where most people live who attend Chapman? Do people typically commute, or live in the graduate housing?

Re: Chapman 2011!
I'm wondering what people think about how Chapman compares to Loyola in L.A.? I thought I was definitely going to attend Chapman with an 80% ride (about $100k), but I just got admitted to Loyola with a $69k ride. Now I'm trying to decide between the two. If I went to Chapman, I could live with my dad who is starting a new job in Newport Beach next month. Plus, I happen to like OC much better than downtown L.A. But there's the fact that Loyola is a better school with better job prospects upon graduation...
Am I nuts for still considering Chapman after getting the scholarship to Loyola?

Congrats on the two scholarships. You aren't nuts.IamKristieHi wrote:Am I nuts for still considering Chapman after getting the scholarship to Loyola?
As far as "better job prospects," I would call and talk to current students from both schools to get a realistic picture of how dismal job placement actually is. Loyola has slightly better job placement rates overall and will place better than Chapman in the LA market. The two schools probably break even with job placement in the OC market, but Loyola might have a marginal edge based on its stronger alumni base. ITE, neither school is going to place well unless you make very good grades.
Do your scholarships come with strings attached, i.e., requirements to maintain a certain GPA? If so, is one school more lenient than the other?
If you really want to stay in the OC, Chapman is probably a more logical choice than Loyola. You have $30K more scholarship at Chapman and you will save between $40K-60K in COL by living with your father. That's huge. If I were in your shoes, I'd press both schools for more money by using your respective scholarships as leverage. Figure out how you can get a legal education and accumulate the least possible amount of debt.

I definitely will have less debt with Chapman, but I'm really not sure if I want to work in OC afterward. I'd like to have more flexibility with all of SoCal in general. Also, both schools require you stay in the top 1/3rd of your class to maintain the scholarship (Chapman says keep a 3.0 GPA which from what I've heard equals the top 1/3rd).
I guess this upcoming Scholar's Weekend at the end of the month will be helpful. Hopefully the decision will be clearer after interacting with both schools

Definitely visit each school. You'll figure out what school best suits your needs.IamKristieHi wrote:I'd like to have more flexibility with all of SoCal in general.
In point of fact, neither school really gives you that much flexibility with the entire Southern California area, which has three very distinct markets: Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego. Regional schools like Loyola and Chapman (and Pepperdine and USD for that matter) are generally insular to their respective markets, e.g., Loyola in LA, Chapman in OC, and USD in San Diego, with some exceptions.

Hey all! Who on here is going to the Scholars Weekend? I know a couple people mentioned it so I assume a least a few of you were invited. Anyone going?
I'm local so I'm thinking I'll go to Friday's activities. Just want to see who else is planning on attending.

Uh-oh, Chapman falls out of the top 100. Let's see matriculants drop like flies now lol. Unfortunately for these types of schools, it'll hurt.

Guess they have to take off those top 100 badges and bragging rights off their website and other info sheets lol. They were so proud of it last year I almost feel kind of bad for them.longhornlaw wrote:Down from 93 to 104. Ruh roh.adonai wrote:Uh-oh, Chapman falls out of the top 100. Re: Chapman 2011!
Just pure speculation on my part. When USD rose 16 spots to 55 last year, they actually extended their deposit deadline a few more weeks just because of their new ranking so students could give them more consideration. Those students really bit the bullet and I think I remember hearing that it significantly influenced lots of students' decision to matriculate there. I don't think Chapman would be any different in this regard to the non-informed prospective law student.thedream21 wrote:where are you guys getting this info from? Law school prospective students research all the time the law schools they applied to. I'm sure they will be informed.
