Re: UVA c/o 2019 Applicants (2015-2016)
Hi folks, I'm seeking some advice. I got into UVA back in the early fall and got a nice scholarship offer (~1/2 tuition). I'm super cost sensitive, so I retook the LSAT in December and moved my score from below their median to above their 75th. I'm >25th GPA, which doesn't make me feel too great. UVA is my top choice, so I am wondering if I should just go ahead and approach them now with my higher LSAT and my sincere desire to attend and see if they will come back with more money, or should I follow the conventional wisdom and wait until I have all my acceptances in tow? My best "leverage" is an NYU acceptance and a WUSTL full ride (I know a WUSTL full ride ain't making UVA blink, but its my highest rank full ride so far).
Happy to know what anyone would do in my situation? I kind of just want to email Dean Faulk and say, dude, let's not play games, give me a Dillard and I'll send my deposit in that day! (lol)

If you took December then they definitely saw and considered your score in making this offer. Schools get your LSAT score automatically even if they've admitted you, and when they go to make scholarship offers they pull your file. I don't think reminding them of your score is a good case to make.fliptrip wrote:Hi folks, I'm seeking some advice. Have you applied to schools in the same band as UVA that you're waiting to get money from? That is most likely your only leverage here.

I think OP is saying they received a scholarship offer prior to the December retake. It sounds like UVA didn't have this score when making its offer.jg61 wrote:If you took December then they definitely saw and considered your score in making this offer. Sorry I wasn't clear. The scholarship offer came at the same time as my admission, which was in October, so it was based on my old score.jg61 wrote:

My mistake. I see what you meant. Not sure what I would do either. Are you concerned about using up your "ask" and then getting other $ offers later on that would've helped? That's one thing that came to mind.fliptrip wrote:Sorry I wasn't clear. The scholarship offer came at the same time as my admission, which was in October, so it was based on my old score.jg61 wrote:

Just curious, do most scholarship offers come with the acceptance packet, or have some people received offers later on? I was accepted back in December, but I just got the usual financial aid letter saying aid would be announced in March. UVA has really won me over, but I can't imagine paying full tuition or anything close to that.

My impression was that only big money (Dillards and such) go out with the packet/initial acceptance. So I wouldn't write off merit aid. I don't know about half-rides and such, but it may still be in the realm of possibility. And you can always try to negotiate to get more than your initial offer.skimmilk wrote:Just curious, do most scholarship offers come with the acceptance packet, or have some people received offers later on? If my file is already "under review," should I wait to send a Why UVA essay or do you think it's ok to submit it now?nicola16 wrote:It's not something they ask for, you can just submit it as an additional essay! It's just to show them that you really are serious about UVA, especially if your numbers are potentially on the fence or YP.Navyhornguy wrote:I'm seeing quite a bit of people submitted a "Why UVA" essay. I do not remember seeing it on the application. Were any of you asked for it or should I go ahead and write one perhaps just in case?

Got my scholarship! Thoroughly shocked, they gave me $40k a year, much more than I had any right to expect
90% sure I'll be attending now!

Does anyone think sending a non-solicited "Why UVA" has made a significant difference in getting accepted/ scholarships? I applied a little bit late, early January, and am thinking about emailing a "Why UVA" this week. Thanks. My LSAT is at median and my GPA is between 25-50.

If you feel that it is well written and it will help to put your mind at ease, I wouldn't hesitate to send it. I don't foresee an instance where it would hurt you, but it could be worthwhile to give the admissions office a quick call, mention how interested you are in UVA, and then ask if you could supplement your application with the additional addendum.Navyhornguy wrote:+1calilaw33 wrote:Does anyone think sending a non-solicited "Why UVA" has made a significant difference in getting accepted/ scholarships? Good luck to you guys.

Don't count on it ha. Complete 11/16 here. UR since 11/17. And 69 days is not that long of a wait compared to other poor souls who applied in September.Navyhornguy wrote:Was pleasantly surprised to go from the "received" email this morning to "complete" to "under review" all in the same day. Waitlisted at UVA
Is there any hope? Have they taken many students off the waitlist in the past?

Sorry about the WL. I'm not sure if their strategy with the waitlist is the same as it used to be where they shuttled a relatively large number of applicants to it. So, I"m not ignoring your question, but just don't know.MrR10 wrote:Waitlisted at UVAIs there any hope? Have they taken many students off the waitlist in the past?
When did you go UR?
Hope you're able to make a move off. Did you already write a Why UVA? If it's your number one choice it could be worth it to visit.
Good luck.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
