+1. GULC is only an option for me if they have some $$ to go with it. Wish they were more transparent.Rory19 wrote:I wholeheartedly agree with this. Although I am still considering Georgetown without any inclination of merit aid the lack of transparency in the process is very unsettling. If I did not follow this forum I would have no idea whether merit aid was still on the table. GULC should aspire to have an informative application process and how merit aid is distributed is an important part of that.Crowing wrote: I personally didn't even get the first e-mail, and I have pretty good numbers for GULC. I just wish the entire merit aid process was more transparent especially because I think it would be mutually beneficial to both applicants and the school. I am not even going to consider GULC at sticker, but I don't want to withdraw if there is any possibility of getting $. It would be a lot better if there was a specific timetable to merit aid consideration so if I am sure that I missed the scholarship boat I can withdraw and move onto other plans and GULC can have another open spot.
On a secondary note, has anyone heard about PILS scholarships? Last year results did not come out until late March.

I had sent an email to ask them what did that updated information mean, and they listed a few examples such as updated transcript and a new resume but never mentioned the "expected offer".BigZuck wrote:The fact that you didn't follow simple, explicit directions?mez4083 wrote:After receiving the first email regarding to the scholarship, I did not submit any additional information but to tell them that I wanted to be considered. I did not get the "finalist" email and was noticed this morning that there would be no $ for me. So in that case, without any "expected offer" as mentioned by some of you, what did they based on to make that decision?

Thanks, I got it. Regretfully I missed this opportunity.

In the first email they specifically mentioned that they were interested in knowing "where Georgetown fits into your thinking" and "what level of funding would influence your decision." I think they were looking for more than just a "yes I'm interested in being considered" response.
In response to your original question... hypothetically if the original email was intended primarily to gauge individuals' interest in actually attending Gtown so as to more strategically apply their merit funds, a short and uninformative response would indicate very little interest.

You live and you learn. Hopefully you have other options and can use this as a learning experience in other funding negotiations.mez4083 wrote:got it. Has Georgetown always done this? I'm above the LSAT median and GPA 75% and haven't heard anything. Merit aid would have been the only reason I'd consider GULC over the other schools I've heard back from. This approach reeks of sleaze and desperation.

I'm not you, but if I was, I wouldn't wait until March. I would write an "LOCI" of sorts and send it right now. If gauging interest is actually what they are doing in this process, then it would probably go a long way to hear that you are thankful that they considered you for merit funding, still very interested in attending Gtown, and very interested in being reconsidered for merit aid in late March. That is assuming that all of that is true for you. If you are kind of "eh" about Gtown, I would recommend doing nothing and leaving the $$$ for those of us who actually consider Gtown a top choice!mez4083 wrote:They said there would be another chance in late March, right? Sounds like you're not interested. That is ok. Just withdraw. MVP will be lucky to have you.rjparson wrote:Has Georgetown always done this? Most of the people who are upset are those who are bound for higher ranked schools and a Georgetown scholarship would just be a pawn in their other negotiations or a trophy to collect like so many Pokemon. That is the strangest thing of all to me.

I think this is the first time they've done this. But it's hard for me to be genuinely upset about this just because I probably would have just used GULC to leverage more scholly from other schools, so I guess I'm not really in a position to express indignation. But it does sound really unfortunate for people who really wanted to attend but needed scholly to make attendance viable.
That being said, there's no way GULC is straight up out of money at this point. People withdraw and stuff. Scholly budgets are in constant flux until classes start, so ppl should still send LOCI's and demonstrate sincere interest if they still want to attend

Gtown is still my top choice. I am one of "you" lol. Thanks for your suggestion and I would write the "LOCI" thing right now. Re: Georgetown c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
I've got a question about ED applications for those who have been following this thread longer than I have. GULC says that they'll get back to ED applicants within 3 weeks, assuming complete before 2/1 and no interview. From my nominal research, it looks like GULC snail mails acceptances, and e-mails WL's and dings. So, if it gets to the 3 week mark, and there hasn't been an e-mail yet, can it be reasonably inferred that an acceptance is in the mail?

I think at this point we've established that it wasn't necessarily based on your demand as people initially lashed out and said. If you were able to state adequately why you wanted to go to Georgetown they let most people through, it seems, regardless of their demand. I think most of the people that were turned down weren't truly interested in Georgetown, wanted to use a scholarship there as a bargaining chip elsewhere, and GULC saw through that.lawschoolboundfuture wrote:To counter the conspiracy argument, I asked for a full ride and i got a finalist email.

I'm not taking sides on whether what GULC is doing is acceptable or ethical, but I think it's pretty obvious what they are trying to do. This is a tumultuous time in law school admissions and they are trying to gain insight into what the other schools are doing as far as aid goes. During the recession being an adcomm was probably pretty easy as people were beating down the doors to get into law school. Now that things have been thrown into flux they are looking to obtain all possible information to give them an edge in maintaining their numbers. Looks like it may have backfired on them though as it seems a good number of you have withdrawn in disgust.

Backfired is one way of looking at it. Another way is that they saved themselves the hassle of making $$$ offers to people whose interest in attending Gtown is so tenuous that it can be completely wiped out by one relatively minor bump in the road. I would probably see that as a victory and one potential reason that Gtown is doing this in the first place.PBateman1 wrote:I'm not taking sides on whether what GULC is acceptable or ethical, but I think it's pretty obvious what they are trying to do. You'd consider GULC starting (and effectively ending) the $ negotiation process by offering nothing to be a "relatively minor bump in the road"?mcb0902 wrote:Backfired is one way of looking at it. Re: Georgetown c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
I see it differently. This was no negotiation; more like an binding arbitration. You'd consider GULC starting (and effectively ending) the $ negotiation process by offering nothing
GULC asked applicants what it would take for them to enroll. Some/many responded with "$120k". GULC thought, hmmm, that applicant's numbers are not above both 75th's, and will not receive anything close to that amount in merit aid. But offering such applicants, say $10k/$30k over three years, would probably be insulting when such applicant already told us it would take $120k for them to choose us (GULC). Since we are not even gonna get close, let's not waste time on a "$ negotiation process."
Yes, GULC could have made that much more clear, but expecting to negotiate from a starting position of near full tuition is a pipe dream, unless that $120k was from another T14 school.

Reading closely and critically is a professional skill that we should all try to improve. They didn't exactly offer nothing. They offered nothing "at this time" and reiterated that, so the negotiation hasn't even really started yet. I wouldn't be surprised if an LOCI in response to the zero aid email resulted in an opening offer later in the process.

Hi, any insight into how many changes in status date an applicant typically sees before a decision is rendered?
