Re: WUSTL c/o 2018 Applicants
Yeah they probably meant transferring up from WUSTL
Which, to be fair, is a good idea for like 20% for the class every year.
(about half the people in the top like 40% of the class who want to work outside of STL, depending on their goals and current scholly $).
So he might just be trying to be helpful in an awkward way. I wouldn't take it too harshly.

I'm curious. Is WUSTL's placement out of STL almost impossible?

Seriously, if you are not accustomed to being around people like that (i.e. you grew up poor, like me), this is probably something you need to prepare yourself for.scottidsntknow wrote:I mean you are entering an incrediblyprettysnobby profession fwiw
Are you asking if you are screwed if you are gunning for biglaw and strike out on STL biglaw? No, frankly with good grades, you probably have a better chance at NYC biglaw than STL biglaw if you are not from here.itskevin wrote:I'm curious. Is WUSTL's placement out of STL almost impossible?

I really like WashU, and would put it very high and the right $$ could make it my top choice.MadwomanintheAttic wrote:Dream_weaver32 wrote:Interview went great.

Yeah that's an exaggeration. It's just not great anywhere really. WUSTL placement is just "ok" in a variety of places, that's kinda our thing. About a quarter of the class stays in Missouri, 10-15% go to NYC and Chicago each, about 5-10% go to DC, California, and Texas each, and the rest is random as far as I can tell (10% or more are unemployed).itskevin wrote:I'm curious. Yeah Chicago is a tough market. Helps if you are from there though. There are just so many schools trying to place there.imKMart wrote:So it is difficult to poach Chicago?Fiero85 wrote:Yeah that's an exaggeration. It's just not great anywhere really. I've heard it is tie-sensitive. Thankfully, about all my ties are located in Chicago.LET'S GET IT wrote:Yeah Chicago is a tough market. Helps if you are from there though. Yeah if you want Chicago, get your stats up high enough to go to Northwestern or UChi.
After that, WUSTL or Illinois for cheap are the next best options, but are by no means an easy road.

I'd throw in NDLS for cheap with that group, but yeah UChi or NU would increase your chances dramatically. None of the other options are great if you are set on Chi biglaw.Fiero85 wrote:Yeah if you want Chicago, get your stats up high enough to go to Northwestern or UChi.

Re: WUSTL c/o 2018 Applicants
Can anyone (current students?) speak to the PI community at WUSTL? I hadn't strongly considered it, but so far they've offered me the most generous scholly, and I'm trying to minimize debt burden as much as possible. But, I don't have ties to midwest and would like to end up in CA or NY, so weighing $$ against prestige, employment numbers, and strength of the public interest program/community. Thoughts?

Ties surely don't hurt, but they're not as important as in a small city like STL.imKMart wrote: I've heard it is tie-sensitive. Thankfully, about all my ties are located in Chicago.
Chicago is straight up hard.
I'd say Chicago, SF, and DC are the hardest places to go if you don't go to the clearly best schools near those places (UChi/Northwestern, Stanford/Berkeley, UVA/GULC, etc.). Just having ties to those cities doesn't help that much coming from say WUSTL or Vanderbilt because they aren't paranoid about people leaving and just use a straight up prestige based hiring system almost without fail.
