Re: Columbia c/o 2020 applicants (2016-2017)
that's why i feel i wasn't interviewed but someone with my exact same stats was. i'm from the area and wrote a why columbia, including that I want to stay in NYC 100%, but she is from far away and I don't think she did.scoot456 wrote:The Columbia interview did feel like an evaluation, but there was a good amount of time dedicated to whether I would move to NY and go to Columbia. For the record my LSAT is very much below the median.Leliana wrote:This.VapidP wrote:wheathins wrote:I mean you interview people as a way to figure out if they really want to go to Columbia? That would be my guess as to why they interview 172+ scorers morecurry1 wrote:Sorry but how is that a reason for Columbia to more vigorously interview them? If they're worried about 172+ers getting poached by HYS, wouldn't it make more sense to concentrate on lower numbers?
I also think it goes the other way as well to some extent. As in, they're trying to figure out if the applicant really wants to go to Columbia, but also using the interview as a tool to establish a personal connection, talk about what the school can offer, answer questions. I didn't interview at CLS but my UVA interview honestly felt less like an evaluation of candidacy and more an advertisement for the school, lol.

Re: Columbia c/o 2020 applicants (2016-2017)
Just to add to the data. I applied in early December with an LSAT below the 25th, and GPA above the 75th. Never invited to interview, and have somehow survived the initial purges. I assume I'm heading towards a ding, especially without an interview request.

Re: Columbia c/o 2020 applicants (2016-2017)
This was a question for me as well. Interviewer was very frank, "What are the chances you would actually relocate to NYC?" or something like that.scoot456 wrote:The Columbia interview did feel like an evaluation, but there was a good amount of time dedicated to whether I would move to NY and go to Columbia. Same -- interviewer asked why Columbia, what made me interested in NYC, what non-academic pursuits I could see myself engaging in in NYC, etc.Pozzo wrote:This was a question for me as well. Sorry to hear that! Did you also receive an email/change in status checker or was it purely a letter in the mail? I just realized my apt # is missing from my email and don't want to notify them until they make a decision.patttt wrote:Just got the letter in the mail - ding.

Also adding to the data. Below both 25ths, interviewed early December, and have survived the WL purges so far.

In via email! LSAT = 75, GPA a little below median. No interview, complete early December.
I had resigned myself to a ding or waitlist so this was quite a surprise. I had just sent in a resume update plus quasi loci so maybe that reminded them I still exist? The decision was one hour after the loci so the timing is suspect.

Re: Columbia c/o 2020 applicants (2016-2017)
More data
75 < LSAT
25 < GPA < 50
Interviewed a month ago. Not a peep since.
Interview was a lot of resume things, but they did focus heavily on why Columbia/NYC come to think of it. I just figured it was typical interview stuff. Gonna be pretty annoyed if I get dinged because they think I'm going to HYS. There are plenty of reasonable reasons to ding me, don't pick such a silly one, damnit.
ETA: And if I get dinged I'm blaming it on being too awesome and none of you can stop me

OK, at the risk of CLS Admissions reading this, knowing who I am, and shaking their head at me/my application, I just have to ask:
What are you guys all referring to by "Why Columbia?"
Do you mean your response to that question if it comes up during your interview, or do you mean your response to that essay prompt in your application? Because my application sure as hell did not have such a prompt, or else I would have written a response to it. Please tell me I did not miss an optional essay prompt.

It's an unprompted essay. For me, I just put it in the same document as an another addendum I wrote and uploaded it into the space where they say you can submit additional materials.MrJD2020 wrote:OK, at the risk of CLS Admissions reading this, knowing who I am, and shaking their head at me/my application, I just have to ask:

People just mean an unsolicited paean to the wonder that is CLS/ a written explanation of why they are particularly interested in CLS.MrJD2020 wrote:OK, at the risk of CLS Admissions reading this, knowing who I am, and shaking their head at me/my application, I just have to ask:

As for those who sent in a Why CLS addendum, I'm not going to worry about the fact that I didn't, since it wasn't an official optional prompt.

I've also survived the WL wave. I'm GPA = 25, LSAT = median, so I figured I was going to get hit with a WL for sure. No interview request yet either
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
