Seems like they're going through everyone, and it could mean anything. I got rejected with an update today and the 8th, but I saw some accepts on LSN.

so, i just want to follow whats going on here. GULC took their admitted students and emailed them asking them how much it would take them to come flat out. then they used that as a means of yield protection / being cheap and moved forward with the applicants with the highest numbers who asked for the least, asking for a 150 word essay to further yield protect? is this actually happening? if so, i think this is the lowest any t14 has ever gone and its going to turn off many qualified applicants in the year to come. someone please correct me if im wrong, but NOT cool GULC. how about just asking for a why georgetown up front and then giving money to the most qualified applicants who seem genuinely knowledgeable and interested in your school at time of admission, instead of all of this non-sense?

It seems like some people who treated the question as an opportunity to express interest in GULC got more money than they requested or the request for an essay. But some people who did the same got zilch and no invite to an essay. Qualified applicants will continue to apply and schools know that. The handful that don't likely wouldn't have matriculated anyway.

I have medianish stats and asked for 6 figures and I am a "finalist." Seems to me like they just cut off people who were going to go to other schools anyway and weren't really interested to begin with. Seems fine to me. I mean, I guess they could pull a UVA and back the truck up for people who would never actually attend but I don't really see the point in that. Looks like they want to give money to people who want to actually attend, I think that's just fine.

I don't have stellar numbers for GULC and I'm a finalist. I expressed sincere interest and I also asked them to match GW's offer which was a good amount of money. GULC also consistently expresses that all their decisions are 'holistic', I don't find this 'unprofessional' and if you never were really serious about GULC in the first place, why complain?

How do you know whether he was serious about GULC in the firs place? It's not unprofessional to decline offer scholarships. What's unprofessional is to request that a prospective student give a starting amount that he would need to attend, and then to reject that student based solely on that, without even an application. It's beyond unprofessional; it's insulting, especially to those of us who were seriously considering GULC after getting that first email request.

I understand the disappointment from those of you who did not receive the finalist email. But I don't think that people were rejected based on the starting amount they gave - I asked for an amount which was relatively high, and explained why this amount would make the difference for me. I also explained why I would go to Georgetown over other schools. I think they used our original applications, combined with this letter, and made decisions based on our previous essays, personal statements, expressed interest in Georgetown, etc.

What information would be different if one sent an application instead? GULC sent the initial email to certain people they were initially considering and based on the way that someone responded, they cute down on their considerations. Since this is a merit based scholarship an application would be very similar except the student would choose to send in the same information by a deadline instead of the law school instigating an answer through email. If I didn't get the "finalist" offer, I wouldn't feel insulted. Whether a law school asks you to let them know or you do it on your own, the same information applies. GULC is just trying to make it more systematized. I'm not saying everyone who didn't get it isn't interested, I'm just saying that the people who aren't actually interested may have shown that through their response.

yeah thats why i was asking for clarification. if that is indeed what they are doing, then that is completely fine. lots of posters feel otherwise though.

Yeah, understandable. I have no idea what they're doing but that's the only way that would make sense to me.

Yes, but the way the went about it is completely absurd. Since they pre-selected the applicants upfront, they could just have made it more like an application to gauge interest vs. the way this was handled. they have managed to put off quite a number of really stellar candidates in the process.

LOL I saw you guys referencing the "150 email" and thought you meant it was a poor attempt at trolling (150 on 180 scale).

Super glad I didn't submit my application to GULC after all, since I was only going to use them for possible scholarship negotiation elsewhere 8)

I too was scholarship dinged. Do we need to send a reply to still be considered for aid in the future?

So... I was not invited to apply for merit $, but I've been meaning to beg for some with a very nice LOCI and a few offers from other schools. Should I:

a) move fast, before they run out of money
b) wait for all of this to blow over
c) give up

Not to discourage you, but I was in your position and I shoot them an email asking to be considered. Dean was nice and replied that the Scholarship Committee would consider me, which got my hopes up, but only to find out this morning that they are unable to offer any.

Ah, well that is a little disheartening. I suppose that I should move though if I want to be considered at all. Did you include other offers in your email?

Thanks for your help!

Sorry to interrupt this discussion haha. I also went complete again today after going complete for the first time on 1/18. Is there any consensus on what this means? Also, for those of you who heard today, how were you notified?

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
