Hey doge, you mentioned the monticello for apartments in the CWE. They have a 1br layout that I like, but isn't it super far from a metro stop? How did you get to school without a car?

I live a few buildings over from there (closer to Euclid) and it's like a 10 minute walk to the metro and have no car. Granted, I walk fast.TetrisBlock wrote:Hey doge, you mentioned the monticello for apartments in the CWE. They have a 1br layout that I like, but isn't it super far from a metro stop? I mean you can always RSVP and then back out.LawsRUs wrote:to rsvp or not to rsvp for asw that is the question

And you should ask if they're gonna have a housing concierge again this year, and if so, you'd save money just doing that. They had someone last year you could use to go check places out for you, take pics/skype, and even walk certain routes to tell you how far the place is from XYZ.

Re: WUSTL c/o 2018 Applicants
I didn't go to ASW. Obviously I can't speak for the WashU ASW but I'm not a big fan of ASW's. I went to one and it was enough for me, I preferred sitting in on a real class and seeing a normal day. Also, when I visited outside ASW, I got to meet personally with the dean of admissions, which was valuable to me.altf4 wrote:Not really much of a party starter, but would current WUSTL students suggest visiting the school on ASW no matter what? Or would any 2-3 day combination between Wed~Sat combination basically work for a good mix of school/bar review goodness? Trying to plan a big ol' trip to the States and visiting a few schools but won't much money so I'd have to restrict it to just a couple weeks... Appreciate any input you may have!LawsRUs wrote:Why. someone pls tell me why.
Why is this thread so b-o-r-i-n-g now. It used to be the funnest thread. What happened here. I want more of a page-72 feel. Let's get this party started.![]()
Seriously tho this thread used to make my waiting on my apps at least bearable. I like this community.

This. I found a place easily and started looking late.scottidsntknow wrote:You could find a place like a day before moving in, don't worry haha. can't speak for all of them but mine had carpet (apt. 505 - ask if it's available if you tour since it was on a corner and slightly bigger)
and yeah, like scotty said, it was about a 10 minute walk to metro, so not bad at all

As an undergrad alum, I recall that large apartments near campus would usually be rented out in April/May. But for an actual adult apartment (like a 1 bedroom or studio), esp. if it's outside of the Loop or Demun, you can look the month before. I found my favorite apartment in undergrad in May and moved in June. It's like any other city that most normal apartments don't go on the market until people put in 30 days notice.

Any thoughts on living near tower grove park? I will have a car and plan on purchasing a law school ramp pass. I'm looking for somewhere safe, relatively quiet, but with options for food/drink/going out.

Yes, Tower Grove is my favorite! South of the park is the safest and nicest, plus closest to all the great restaurants/bars on South Grand and Morganford. The closer to the park the better. North of the park is okay, but less to do without crossing the park. East of the park is the least safe/nice. Once you cross Gravois, things go significantly downhill.valen wrote:Any thoughts on living near tower grove park? I will have a car and plan on purchasing a law school ramp pass. If you're looking in South City, St. Louis Hills is great too and pretty cheap, especially north of Chouteau (technically "Kingshighway Hills," but whatever). Downside is that you pass Ted Drewes on the drive back, which may be hazardous to your health

I'd also say the western parts of University City and the Demun neighborhood would be greatvalen wrote:Any thoughts on living near tower grove park? Can someone post a map of St Louis cities with street names preferably? Google doesn't seem to know anything about "apartments in Demun St Louis" and doesn't know a whole lot about The Loop/University park either. Maybe I'm missing something but Apartment Guide isn't very clear and is mostly complexes.

The Loop is Delmar between Big Bend and Skinker. It's part of University City, where most Wash U students live from campus north toLadyProspero wrote:Can someone post a map of St Louis cities with street names preferably? Olive, mostly between Big Bend and Skinker. The western part of UCity would be from Big Bend to Hanley and Delmar to Olive. North of Olive is generally sketchy. Lots of students also in Skinker-DeBaliviere, roughly Skinker to DeBaliviere (big surprise) and Delmar to the park. Demun is pretty much the area south of campus bounded by Demun (again, big surprise), Skinker, and Clayton. Most of the bars and restaurants in UCity are in the Loop area and are more residential the further away you get from there. North of the Loop is cheaper than south of the Loop, but also slightly less safe (especially as you get closer to Olive). There's occasionally muggings around the Loop, but usually it's undergrads being dumb and walking around at 3am texting with headphones on. The restaurants/bars in Demun are on Demun across from the seminary (Sasha's and Jimmy's are pretty popular) and a bit more on Wydown near Hanley.
Keep in mind that Demun/Clayton (Clayton being the suburb that Demun is a part of) and Central West End are some of the most expensive neighborhoods in St. Louis. UCity isn't quite as expensive but still somewhat overpriced. You can get similar places in city neighborhoods for much less. But UCity/Clayton/CWE have the best public transit to Wash U, since there's so many students. There's "shuttles" (used to be privately run by Wash U, but now part of the St. Louis transit system) that run between those neighborhoods and campus, plus Metrolink from CWE to campus.

I don't know of any complexes around there, most of the buildings in Tower Grove South are two or four flats with individual landlords. Best way to find something is Craigslist or walk around the neighborhood.valen wrote:Super helpful, thanks!
