Re: Georgetown c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
Got an email telling me I suck and am not good enough for their scholarship consideration. Why did you waste my time asking me how much money it would take for me to go to your school then?
Withdrawal probably coming soon, but now it will be annoyed instead of sad. Seriously, don't invite someone to demonstrate interest in a scholarship if you're going to change your mind with no stated reason. At least make it an application or something.

Their initial selection was based on my response to the email asking what kind of funding I would need? They made an actual selection based on that? I seriously cannot understand the thinking here, unless they just wanted to outdo the awkwardness of the request email with this nonsense.I am getting back to you regarding your interest in merit based aid at Georgetown. The Scholarship Committee has just finished the initial selection process for our limited amount of scholarship funding and we are unable to offer you merit based aid at this time.
The key words here are “at this time.” There is still a possibility that some funding may become available over the course of the next few months. If you remain interested please let us know, and we will be happy to revisit your request for funding and be back in touch in late March.
We remain hopeful that you will continue your interest in Georgetown and that you will ultimately choose to join us in the fall.
Best,
Andy

Yep, just got the e-mail now. No merit aid. Will definitely be withdrawing soon.
Also think it's hilarious that it came an hour after my Cornell offer. At least one school showed me some love the day before Valentine's Day

So... were people dinged for financial aid because they requested too much money? I don't get it.

Got the same email.... SERIOUSLY?? Huge PR fuck-up on their part IMO... Who tells you you're part of a select group considered for merit aid, asks you for info on what other schools have offered you, and then dings your request for aid completely?? Unprofessional, shocking, and disappointing. Leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. Srsly, fuck these idiots.
Edit: Officially withdrawn from Georgetown.

Sorry to those who got the cold shoulder from FinAid.
Selfishly, if you're going to withdraw, could you do it expeditiously? Some of us on the held list would sure appreciate it.

+1. That's why Gtown continues to have a PT program/a giant class and its employment stats are awful.lsacqueen wrote:Got the same email.... SERIOUSLY?? Huge PR fuck-up on their part IMO... This really is horrifically unprofessional. I can't withdraw from here yet because my family won't let me, but I really really REALLY want to send them a letter expressing how insulting it is to request an honest answer about funding, and then eliminate someone from consideration based on that answer. It leaves me with the worst taste in my mouth of any admissions office I've dealt with so far. Sorry you asked me how much it would take to go and I answered honestly, next time I'll lie to your face.lsacqueen wrote:Got the same email.... SERIOUSLY?? Huge PR fuck-up on their part IMO... Annoying. Especially since this will probably make me more cautious in asking for money from other schools.

Re: Georgetown c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
True dat. Even if they're unable to meet my full demands, they could at least SAY something like that, explain their decision, and give me their best offer. Not to mention, if I'm going to be entering a profession in which success is predicated largely upon your image and professionalism, why would I choose this school based solely on my interaction with the unbelievably unprofessional and rude admissions office? They might as well shoo qualified applicants away, or warn them to not apply if they're hoping for substantial merit aid. Now I'm upset I wasted the $21 to send my application to them... total waste of money.Cicero76 wrote:This really is horrifically unprofessional. Denied from held today. I find the bolded part of the rejection letter funny given this year's applicant pool and the dean's admittance that their numbers may drop a bit (if I remember correctly).
Last year, we received over 8,000 applications for the 575 places available in our first year class, and each year the quality of our applicant pool continues to increase.

I actually didn't ask for a full-ride, but asked them to match my largest scholarship. Would have been about half the COA. I still got dinged completely.Lavitz wrote:I think so. Re: Georgetown c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
fwiw, I don't think that it was based on how much money you requested. I requested $120,000 to match some offers I got at other schools, and I got the 150 follow-up email. When I sent my response to the first email, I basically wrote a LOCI with an aid request in the last paragraph... So, maybe the first email was used to determine interest/goodness of fit?RSterling wrote:I actually didn't ask for a full-ride, but asked them to match my largest scholarship. Re: Georgetown c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
In my case as well. I think they probably offer money to those with the highest numbers willing to attend for the least scholarship. Past the initial group selected, I think all that matters is the ratio of high numbers and tolerance for low scholarships. I doubt they'll even use the 150-word essay to evaluate... I think they are just buying time.Lavitz wrote:I think so. +1 on the bluecouch's response. I also sent a very sincere essay explaining my interest in Georgetown. I also asked for 6 figures. But I truly want to go to this school, and i believe that the reader of my original email realized that.
Makes me think that if any of you actually wanted to go to Gtown they would have let you continue on in the scholarship process.

Everything about my app screamed G'town/DC yet I didn't get anything. Asked them to match a low 6 digit figure and expected they would at least offer something. Since some people who also submitted 6 fig offers are still in the running for something I'd say a high request was not prohibitive in of itself
Pretty dissappointed as G'town was in my top two (which I explicitly told them). Sitting on this for a few days but I'll likely withdraw Monday. Oh well. Congrats to all those who made the first cut.

+1. You and bluecouch are spot on. I had a similar experience, asking for 120k+, but essentially set it up as a LOCI, then explained my debt aversion & how much $ I'd want.moneyball026 wrote:+1 on the bluecouch's response. For those of you who were accepted: how many times did your app go complete before a decision was rendered?
Complete 1/22/13 and 2/13/13.

Complete 1/22/13 and 2/13/13.
Also: ITT people with great scholarships to better schools that would never actually consider Georgetown at this point anyway complain about not being given any money. Is that right?
