Seriously. I'm wondering if schools are beginning to factor GPA harder than in the past. Considering falling applicant numbers, it feels like I'm in a clock shop in here.goldenboy514 wrote:all of you 17x applicants getting bad news is truly disheartening. I agree. In my mind YP is the worst kind of gaming. It's so frustrating. "We want good, but not TOO good."patfeeney wrote:

YP is lame. My 8 months of LSAT prep were entirely with Penn in mind, and if I get rejected from Harvard due to low numbers and Penn due to high numbers I will just cry.

Add me to the UR1 pile as of today, 1/17. Above Median LSAT, GPA right around the 25th. I love you in all of your capricious fury, Penn.

Feeney--since you wrote a "Why Penn", hopefully if they YP you it'll just be a WL and not a ding. If you get a WL, and then write a LOCI and visit the school, that will surely be enough to convince them you're for real! But hopefully you'll get in, and none of this will matter!lawschool22 wrote:I agree. In my mind YP is the worst kind of gaming. It's so frustrating. "We want good, but not TOO good."patfeeney wrote:

I sure hope so, and I hope they'll hold me long enough to visit, since I won't be able to visit until the second week of March.Ambi-Turner wrote:Feeney--since you wrote a "Why Penn", hopefully if they YP you it'll just be a WL and not a ding. They don't even look at the WL until May (awful), so I wouldn't worry about that. I submitted ed2 with the Dean Fitts essay, but my numbers are too low for YP regardless.patfeeney wrote:I sure hope so, and I hope they'll hold me long enough to visit, since I won't be able to visit until the second week of March.Ambi-Turner wrote:Feeney--since you wrote a "Why Penn", hopefully if they YP you it'll just be a WL and not a ding. I know what UR means in context but I don't know what it stands for. Is it "under review"? That is what I have been saying in my head when I read it.
I hope to see some good news here soon. This is so much worse than waiting for LSAT scores to come back and seeing people realize they are facing a retake.

Yeah, it's "under review." Normally there are multiple stages, which you can only tell if there are multiple dates.ftbchamp231 wrote:I know what UR means in context but I don't know what it stands for. Is it "under review"? That is what I have been saying in my head when I read it.

UR1 is the first date you get under review, say 12/10. If you check your status later and the date has changed from 12/10 to 1/17, then you are technically UR2. On occasion, it goes to UR3 or U4, but those can be rare.

Where is everyone getting this YP stuff from? Last year they accepted 29/31=94% of everyone who was above both 75ths. Also, each increase in quartile increased likelihood of acceptance.* I can't even see it for the super high people (i.e. 175+/3.9+), as they got 9/10=90%.

*The one exception was for below median LSAT going from 50-75 -> 75+ GPA. But that looks to be mostly a product of very small sample size, and I don't think LSATs of 168 and below are anyone's definition of YP anyway.

I doubt it is that simple. There doesn't seem to be a discernible pattern to any of this so I doubt yesterday will have much to do with today.jk148706 wrote:OsaroLJ wrote:jk148706 wrote:I wonder if there will be another bloodbath tonight.

Sure. I mean I have no way go predict ANYTHING Penn is doing. But I don't think we have any evidence to say there won't be any emails tonight. We just don't know.OsaroLJ wrote:I doubt it is that simple. Re: Penn c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014 cycle)
Perhaps by YP people mean the fact that it's easier to get into Harvard with a 175/3.84 than it is to Penn. But that's not YP. You're in the same position at each school, 75+ LSAT and 25-50 GPA. Harvard has to accept a high percentage of those below median GPAs because their class is so huge. Penn can afford to be choosier. But at all times, a higher score leads to a higher acceptance rate. The other similarly ranked small school (Chicago) shows similar behavior.
For a real demonstration of YP, check out UVA. As you can see here, a higher score leads to a lower acceptance rate for 75+ LSAT when going from 25-50 -> 50-75 -> 75+ GPA, as well as for above median GPAs when their LSATs increase from 50-75 ->75+

Re: Penn c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014 cycle)
I think they just mean it's easier to get into HLS without proving to Harvard that you want to go there. Whereas Penn seems to (or it has become self-fulfilling) prefer that Why Penn or some other demonstration of interest. It makes sense intuitively that HLS would be less worried about high-numbered applicants matriculating. I agree that the data you have posted/synthesized does show a different pattern than UVA, but we can't, from that data, make a definitive statement about YP. That's because we don't know which of those 29/31 applicants wrote a Why Penn or otherwise demonstrated interest to Penn. Plus that data ignores waitlists, and I think that's what most people claiming YP are afraid of. Not that they won't, ultimately be accepted if they show interest, but that they will be WL'd as opposed to being outright accepted. Whereas at HLS, the waitlist isn't used in that way.cotiger wrote:Perhaps by YP people mean the fact that it's easier to get into Harvard with a 175/3.84 than it is to Penn. But that's not YP.
