I have this same question. I submitted via the portal but have not gotten a confirmation email. Do you guys recommend that I email the admissions office with my LOCI just in case or would that be too much and would bother them? Since the deadline is approaching, I wanna make sure my LOCI gets in my file.boomboompap wrote:Has anyone in the hold group who sent in a LOCI through the portal gotten a confirmation email back? Looks like all the people getting confirmation are those who submitted the LOCI through email.

I would call rather than e-mail. I only received a confirmation e-mail after I called and they checked. Someone earlier in the thread said they had been told that the admissions office is about two weeks behind or something...SimpleMan wrote:I have this same question. Just got the reserve email. This is honestly better than I expected but I'm also a little confused because there's no real reason I shouldn't have been dinged with my numbers. I'm a non-URM below below both 25ths although frankly I do have some pretty crazy softs. Should I even bother hoping that they're just trying to figure out if they can fit me in without ruining their numbers? Or forget it and move on? But I guess there's little downside to riding it out so I'll definitely plan on giving it a week or so and then submitting a well crafted LOCI.

First reserve just means the beginning of the waitlist cycle. When I was on the reserve list for Columbia last year, I got up to the third reserve before receiving the final ding letter.
First reserve -> few accepted -> second reserve (not everyone makes it) -> few more acceptances -> third reserve -> very few acceptances -> ding for everyone.

Same sentiments all around.
ETA looks like Columbia is notorious for waitlisting a huge portion of applicants: http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... p?t=225363

So I applied in early January and just checked my status again today, and I am STILL sitting at "Completion pending." Did I do something wrong, or is the online status checker just slow to update? Panicking a little.

I had a similar problem earlier in the cycle. For me it was because I am still an undergrad and only submitted one academic rec instead of two. Maybe yours is similar?

Yeah, I didn't submit two academic recs (had one academic and one professional) but then supplemented it by February. Have you gone complete yet?agarc3466 wrote:periwinkley wrote:So I applied in early January and just checked my status again today, and I am STILL sitting at "Completion pending." Did they specifically award zero money in your acceptance letter? I thought most schools follow up with awards later after initial acceptance?Po$eidon wrote:Just got in but zero money. Well above both 75ths....

I'm assuming Po$eidon is refering to Butler and Hamilton awards. These only go out with initial acceptances. If you don't receive one, past trends show that you won't be getting much non-need $$.miku015 wrote:Did they specifically award zero money in your acceptance letter? Yes. Honestly Columbia was my top choice and I was hoping for a hammy while expecting a butler but since I'm getting nothing I'm pretty unsure that I can't take them. I'm not a debt fan so I'm a bit bummed atm.tflan19 wrote:I'm assuming Po$eidon is refering to Butler and Hamilton awards. These only go out with initial acceptances. Placed on reserve this morning. Which was surprising because I thought I would be dinged. But, if this means only getting in at sticker it pretty much means the same thing.

Re: Columbia C/O 2019 Applicants - 2015 - 2016
I'm one of the posters that has been complete for a long time without hearing anything new, and that has continued through to today. One of the other posters in this boat got an acceptance a few weeks ago, another discovered that something had gone wrong with their decision being sent out, but that they had been placed on the waitlist earlier on. I wrote to Columbia to ask them if my decision had gotten lost, and they got back to me to let me know that no decision had been reached.
So, if you're one of the people who's been complete since last fall, there doesn't seem to be a way to predict what's going on with your application. It might be worth contacting the office to make sure your email didn't get lost, but then again, it's apparent that there are some of us that are just in this bucket, and I wouldn't want to encourage inundating their office with more questions. A whole lot of mysteriousness.

Mine went complete the day after I submitted my second academic rec. Interviewed a little over a week ago. If you havent called or emailed I definitely would. Good luck!

Yeah, that data is definitely not encouraging. Not sure what the reasoning behind having a waitlist that large is but I guess they have their reasons. I'd like to think that my being somewhat of a statistical outlier means that there was something they liked about my app and will remember me when review time comes around, and if not, well... at least I made it this far.wellitsover wrote:+1Shib26 wrote:.

Was asked by admissions to send them an updated transcript that included two courses I took this winter. Anybody think it is odd for them to be requesting transcript updates this late in the game?
I interviewed a few weeks ago. When I saw the e-mail, I thought it was THE email. A little disappointing for sure, but better than a ding I suppose.

Odd, maybe, but it could mean that they're on the cusp of admitting you and just need this last piece to make it final.rfc180 wrote:Was asked by admissions to send them an updated transcript that included two courses I took this winter. Here's a personal anecdote, if it'll make you feel any better: about a month after I submitted, I was asked for a third, professional, letter of recommendation because I (stupidly) failed to recognize that I had substantial work experience that merited such a letter. I wasn't able to get it to them until about three weeks ago, at which point my application finally went complete. I figured I was screwed if for no other reason than my application going complete so late in the game. I got my admit email about ten minutes ago.

Re: Columbia C/O 2019 Applicants - 2015 - 2016
Here is the breakdown of Columbia, based on LSN input from the last 5 cycles. So even though NYU has a lot of predictive power with Columbia, NYU seems to care more about quartiles (or you can say the LSAT and GPA quartiles for NYU are good predictors for NYU, but Columbia quartiles are not as good of predictors for Columbia).matterhorn wrote: Would you happen to have any similar info re: Columbia? Thank you for all this, I've found your analysis in this and other threads to be immensely helpful.
Looking at LSAT and GPA, you can predict about 57% of applicants
Columbia decision tree, the parenthesis are # correctly classified / # incorrectly classified
Code: Select all
lsat <= 170
| gpa <= 3.49: columbia-Re (458.0/102.0)
| gpa > 3.49
| | lsat <= 165: columbia-Re (440.0/172.0)
| | lsat > 165: columbia-Wa (850.0/471.0)
lsat > 170
| gpa <= 3.28: columbia-Re (96.0/21.0)
| gpa > 3.28
| | lsat <= 171
| | | gpa <= 3.59: columbia-Wa (53.0/26.0)
| | | gpa > 3.59: columbia-Ac (213.0/119.0)
| | lsat > 171
| | | gpa <= 3.54
| | | | lsat <= 173: columbia-Re (81.0/47.0)
| | | | lsat > 173
| | | | | gpa <= 3.51: columbia-Ac (109.0/52.0)
