Re: UVA c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 Cycle)
I was not saying that they use it solely as a soft-reject, but I think it is hard to deny that it is used that way for at least some candidates by them - thus it is not fair to conclude that they would stop waitlisting so many people even if their class was full/near full.NoBladesNoBows wrote:

Historically, this is not the case. The odds aren't good, but no one ever said getting on a WL is a good thing. Still, 7% over the last 3 years and 10% last year is not a soft-reject.
They waitlist almost half of their applicants, I do not believe those are all people on a short list to get admitted off the waitlist. Also worth noting that your 7% figure is after about 42% of people waitlisted withdraw.

Re: UVA c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 Cycle)
the wait list is a contingency plan. There is always a non-negative probability that everyone jumps ship at UVA for other wait list offers, years off/deferment, or peer schools. They keep the wait list to cover their ass so having a wait list doesn't mean that they expect to pull from it. I guess the point i'm trying to make is that regardless of the chance that a school will use the wait list (even if its minuscule as it seems it is this year for Virginia) they will keep a wait list because the probability of using the wait list is never identically equivalent to zero. It is not necessarily malicious to wait list lots of candidates when they don't expect that there is a significant chance that those candidates will receive offers of admission. It is just self serving (which may be malicious depending on your views on morality but thats for another discussion board)

we are definitely on the same page hahah ... just saying that "If UVA truly believed ..., continuing to WL people ... " is trivially trueNoBladesNoBows wrote:A significant chance is different than any chance. I said that if the class was full, it was probably in reference to offers, not actual deposits/commitments. If UVA truly believed that their class was full, and there was no one else that would be admitted, continuing to WL people would be malicious, regardless of any morality judgments. Anyone that is WL'd accepts that they probably have a very small chance of being admitted, but that is very different than NO chance. If they are uncertain if anyone else will be admitted or not, then the class is not officially full. That is what I have been saying.

Just rejected from UVA. Even though I didn't write a Why UVA essay, I am pretty surprised given my other acceptances. Mylsn.info shows 0 other people with similar numbers getting rejected. LSAT >75th, 25th<GPA<50th.

Just withdrew with $$$. Hope one of you gets a nice phone call because of it on Monday! Best of luck to those holding out on the WL.

Status date updated today. Applied 3/14 because I didn't get a waiver for some reason until way after the deadline.
Funny that they've updated the status within a month, while I'm still sitting 2/5 at NYU and Stanford.

Huh? Why are they giving post-deadline waivers when they're out of spots?oaktown wrote:Status date updated today. Applied 3/14 because I didn't get a waiver for some reason until way after the deadline.

That would seem counter intuitive. Maybe they're just trying to bolster their rejection stats?usn26 wrote:Huh? Here's what the meat of the email I got back in March said (note: I did not take the February LSAT):
The February LSAT scores just came out, and we realize that you may have not had time to get your application in before our March 1 deadline. If you'd like to apply to Virginia, we've waived your $80 application fee and extended your application deadline to March 15.

Rejections don't matter for the rankings, do they?

Re: UVA c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 Cycle)
Not directly, but it's my understanding that, in general, a school would rather admit 200 from 4000 applicants (5%) than 200 from 2000 applicants (10%). Elite and selective are often confused for each other.White Dwarf wrote:Rejections don't matter for the rankings, do they?

Nah. I'm at least one person within those numbers that got a rejection. My only reject of the cycle so far.savethewhales wrote:Just rejected from UVA. I was Waitlisted on 3/18 with maybe one of the lowest LSAT scores in UVA history lol... 149... Plus GPA at 25% median. IDK why they would even put me on a waitlist. I guess I'm glad it's not ranked but why even waste their time with a possible second read. O well I'll hold on for as long as they let me.

I was waitlisted and had a LOR sent in a few days ago, UVA's response was something along the lines of "we aren't sure how active the waitlist will be this summer...". If I had to guess I'd say they've got their class filled or almost filled.

When i was Waitlisted in mid March the email they sent me seemed to indicate that they will be making offers off of the waitlist. How many? Who knows but did everyone get the same email?
Dear .....
We have completed review of your application for fall 2015 admission to University of Virginia School of Law.
Since past normally is prologue, we will review thousands of applications this admissions cycle, and have seen/will see incredibly strong candidates in our applicant pool throughout. You certainly presented us with very strong credentials, and we commend you for your extraordinary accomplishments. As we try to manage our enrollment and avoid bringing in a class that is too large, we are proceeding cautiously and are inviting you - along with a number of other outstanding candidates - to be on our waitlist.
I want to state explicitly, this is not a soft-rejection. Please know we consider the waitlist an integral part of our admissions process. We expect to make a number of offers of admission to wait-listed candidates during May, June, and July. We believe that you would excel at Virginia Law and we hope to be able to offer you admission. We will do our best to have a final decision for you as soon as possible.
If you wish to supplement your application with additional information at any point, please feel free to do so. And please note that we do not rank our waitlist. When we are able to make offers of admission to wait-listed candidates, we will review the entire list.
We thank you for your patience throughout this process.
