I'm attending Penn's information session Friday, and it starts with an "Admission & Financial Aid Q&A." You guys have any questions you want me to ask? No guarantees, but I'll do my best...

Ask them what it means if you are stuck on your first UR at 12/19cogitoergosum wrote:I'm attending Penn's information session Friday, and it starts with an "Admission & Financial Aid Q&A." You guys have any questions you want me to ask? No guarantees, but I'll do my best...
But for serious, I'd be interested in a) their resources/track record for placing students in AIII clerkships, and b) how competitive their LRAP is for students who pursue government/public interest.

You guys saw the new detailed employment stats with clerkship breakdowns right? I think clerking is pretty well supported here, but not everyone wants to.crumpledq wrote:Ask them what it means if you are stuck on your first UR at 12/19cogitoergosum wrote:I'm attending Penn's information session Friday, and it starts with an "Admission & Financial Aid Q&A." Re: Penn c/o 2015 Applicants (2011-2012 cycle)
I was thinking more along the lines of what specific resources they offer to students to support them in the application process. My understanding is that Penn does not place as well as its peer schools in federal appellate clerkships, especially outside the 3rd circuit (though I could be wrong about that). NYU's admit materials advertise its relatively new office dedicated to clerkship placements, so I'm wondering what resources Penn has that might be similar. But don't feel obligated to ask, cogito! I should probably just do my own researchr6_philly wrote:You guys saw the new detailed employment stats with clerkship breakdowns right? Re: Penn c/o 2015 Applicants (2011-2012 cycle)
If you mean competitive among students, it's available to everyone who would qualify based on employment and income. If you meant among Penn's peer schools, Penn's LRAP is comparable to UVA's but less generous than Michigan's, as Mich's is not tied to type of employment. Penn's LRAP has no income cap, so you could theoretically qualify for LRAP even with some kind of six figure PI job (though I can't imagine what that would be) while UVA and Mich have a max income to be eligible.crumpledq wrote:b) how competitive their LRAP is for students who pursue government/public interest.cogitoergosum wrote:I'm attending Penn's information session Friday, and it starts with an "Admission & Financial Aid Q&A." I just did a big comparison between these and CCN and outside of Michigan (which is unrestricted by type of employment, like HYS) they all seem fairly similar to me.

Re: Penn c/o 2015 Applicants (2011-2012 cycle)
Personally, I feel like the best resource for clerkship is a good relationship with certain professors. I don't think one would end up depending on the general resources from the school a whole lot. I am not that far in yet, but that's the sense I get.crumpledq wrote: I was thinking more along the lines of what specific resources they offer to students to support them in the application process. Re: Penn c/o 2015 Applicants (2011-2012 cycle)
I was wondering how the decrease in LSAT takers might affect this year's admissions at Penn, so I went to LSN and tallied all of the acceptances from last cycle through today's date in 2011, then I did the same thing for this year. The number I came up with as of January 18, 2011 was 92, while the number of admissions for this cycle as of today is 68.
Full Disclosure: There were a lot of acceptances in last year's graph that lacked a decision date. On those I just made my best guess: 175/3.9 = probably didn't have to wait long, so I included it; 165/3.1, complete on Dec 5=probably didn't get accepted until later, so I didn't include it.
Of course, LSN is imperfect, and perhaps some of this is accounted for by people who retroactively fill in their LSN once everything is said and done, but take it for what it's worth... It makes me just a little bit more optimistic that there may still be lots of admissions to come, even more than at this point last year.

Does anyone know if Penn has ever requested interviews for regular (non-ED and non-waitlisted) applicants?
This is welcoming news.cogitoergosum wrote:I was wondering how the decrease in LSAT takers might affect this year's admissions at Penn, so I went to LSN and tallied all of the acceptances from last cycle through today's date in 2011, then I did the same thing for this year. I'm just going to be an optimist and say that they're planning to cut their class size by ~1/3cogitoergosum wrote:I was wondering how the decrease in LSAT takers might affect this year's admissions at Penn, so I went to LSN and tallied all of the acceptances from last cycle through today's date in 2011, then I did the same thing for this year. Edit: I should say, optimistic for people already in, not so much for people still waiting (sorry!).

Re: Penn c/o 2015 Applicants (2011-2012 cycle)
Yeah, I agree with your points. I think schools are being intentionally slow in filling out their classes so that they can wait and see what they are actually going to have to work withcogitoergosum wrote:I was wondering how the decrease in LSAT takers might affect this year's admissions at Penn, so I went to LSN and tallied all of the acceptances from last cycle through today's date in 2011, then I did the same thing for this year. I just got the call too! Definitely a surprise on a Wednesday. My last UR was 1/12, first one was sometime earlier in January (I think 1/6)

I'm in as well. Really shocked because my last update was 12/9. Sure I was going to the waitlist at this point.

Also just got the call. UR for the second time on 12/21. 25-50 GPA, > 75 LSAT. Very shocked and honored! I thought I had been passed over!
