Hey everyone,

I had a quick question about Columbia's LOR requirements. It wants one professional letter if you graduated before 2015 but I only have freelance editing experience after graduating so I'm not sure if I should 1) submit my 3 academic LORs, which I believe are strong and more indicative of my abilities, or 2) ask my clients to write a LOR for me... kind of stuck on what to do so any advice would be helpful!!

Assistant Director on this issue said unless you're out of undergrad for "a significant amount of time, we do prefer academic letters." This was during an info session and she said professional letters were fine for two prospective in the room who had been out of school for 5-7 years

Not sure if you're within this time frame or if it's more arbitrary than we realize but I really think Columbia wants to know who you are in the classroom and if they're worried about who you are outside of it, they'll just interview you. I say go all three academic.

Not sure if being invited to interview is a bad sign or a good sign or nobody knows -- just as a data point, I was not invited to interview. Above 75ths, applied mid September.

On the flip side, I got an interview and I'm >75th GPA and at the 75th for LSAT. Really curious to understand how they're deciding who to interview...

We have the same stats, but I have radio silence on my end. When did you apply?

The general consensus from last year was that we had no clue how the interview process worked. CLS has been expanding the number of applicants that they interview, but there were still plenty last year, across all ranges of numbers, who got in without having to interview.

I can't remember off the top of my head whether named scholarships were more likely to require an interview first. There was some discussion about it in last year's thread, if anyone is brave enough to dig through.

It was about 20 min. I'm now getting paranoid and second guessing myself...typical

Interview went well. The interviewer is very friendly. Be prepared for the standard questions: Why Columbia, Why do you want to move to NYC. Be prepared to ask some questions at the end.
