Serious disclaimer - I'm like the least Top Law School kid here, and I have no idea how my LORs are being received right now by the admissions committees.

Agreeing with Jeeves, I included the request in the subject. If i hadn't interacted with the prof recently, I would start the email something like -


Dear Dr. X,
Hope you are doing well. I am applying for law school and as I was compiling my personal statement/writing sample/etc I had the chance to look back at some of the work/some of the reading/whatever from your course in Fall/Spring 20__. Topic/Lesson/Project/Paper A, B, and C from your course were influential in motivating me to look towards law as a field of study. I feel that my performance in these areas in your course are demonstrative of my abilities to succeed in law school. In light of that, I am writing to ask if you would be willing to write a LOR. I am hoping to have my application package completed by __/__/2016 [4-6 weeks out, minimum]. [Briefly explain the process of electronically submitting the LOR to LSAC in a way that makes it sound easy haha]. I am applying to Harvard, Yale, and Stanford. Please let me know if there is any other information that I can provide to facilitate this request.

One of my recommenders was the director of the honors program, and so had never actually taught a course that I took. For her, I compiled a list, basically an annotated bibliography, of the major projects, presentations, and papers that I had done in my other upper level classes. This actually turned out to be a really handy document to have on hand for the rest of the process, and for writing cover letters and stuff like that. I just scrolled through my dropbox and reviewed the relevant coursework so I could summarize it.

My other recommender was a former boss who had hired me for my first job after graduation. She asked me what I would like her to focus on, which was kind of awkward, but I realized she wasn't saying, "I can't think of anything good to say," she was really just looking to narrow it down. So, since I had my academic bases covered, I asked her to write about my ability to handle complex real-world problems, adapt to change, deal with ambiguity, interact with professionals, and apply my education to new situations. blah blah blah.

yeah you can (and probably should) be pretty direct about it. sending them an email asking them how theyre doing looks disingenuous when you follow it up with a LOR request right after.

I put "letter of rec request" as the subject of my email. you can start the body of the email with a couple sentences of "hey how are you" kind of stuff, and then politely ask for a LOR in the next paragrph. Concisely explain your circumstances and offer to provide a resume or other info they might want. professors do this all the time, they know the drill

The worst she can say is no if she doesn't remember me, but I'm hoping she does, and if she does, I know for sure she will write me one!

Yeah you're fine. Just take care of everything - transcripts LORs etc - ASAP so you don't have to worry about it later.

I think mine was about 20 days. 7 of those were my school fumbling around with my transcript because there was another student with the same first and last name / middle initial as me at the school at the same time. So from shipment from the school to LSAC it was about 2 weeks.

I had NO IDEA that Cleveland's on Lake Eerie. Drive times from Cleveland to places like Toronto and Chicago and Buffalo and Pittsburgh are just ASTOUNDING yall

As someone who grew up in the Cleveland area and has traveled from there to all of those places, is the drive time astoundingly long or short to you?

Short! I honestly didn't know about the Lake Eerie set up until I just examined it. Didn't know Rochester was so close to Eerie.

And Buffalo is a 5 hr drive to Detroit through Canada?? This is wild

Yeah, after growing up in NE Ohio and being able to get to all sorts of places in a few hours its really weird being in Texas where everything is insanely spread out.

I should've mentioned that The Meerkat Method involves shutting off the computer and writing with pen and ink to prevent distractions. Otherwise I also start googling random shit like "which gulfstream jet has the luxury options that meet my needs" and "how much fiber is contained in a serving of Metamucil".

What can I say? Olds gunna old.
