Didn't write a Why Penn, but then again, didn't write "Why _____" essays for any schools…

Everyone here is saying it's pretty much a requirement - do you think this is just for people below one of the medians? Or everyone?

That was the general belief, but if you read the previous page it appears to be unvalidated. That said, you may want to write one if you feel your #s don't give you the best shot at Penn.

I certainly can't see it hurting.
My numbers are above the 75th, I'm just worried now because the only extra essay I did was a DS. I applied a month ago so I can't write one now, but I freaked out after hearing the same about UVA and then got in so maybe it is unvalidated? If not, totally going to beat myself up for being too lazy to write extra essays haha

Debating on whether or not to apply to Penn. The interdisciplinary approach is awesome to me (I go to a tiny liberal arts school) and the big law placement is stellar. But I'm just not sold on the school mentally and I don't know if I can see myself in Philadelphia for the next three years. :(

What do you think is holding you back from being sold on the school? And Philly is apparently a really great college town and is super affordable. It may have some rough patches, but overall the community is developing.
A lot of it, for me, is the size of the city. I grew up in a town with 4000 people, went to college in a town of 16,000, so making the jump to Philly (or Chicago, NYC, or San Fran for that matter) is very intimidating. I think that's part of why I find Duke, Michigan, and Virginia so appealing: they're all great schools in non-huge cities. Obvious HYS are a different story, but the town of Durham is, at least for me, more appealing than Philly.

Aside from that, there's just something about Penn that sticks for me. I'm not really sure what it is. Maybe it's that a good friend visited while passing through Philly this summer and was less than impressed? I don't know, but it's a real mental block.

I went to Penn UG and can tell you that it did not feel to be as much of a "city" school as some of you make it out to be. The campus itself is fairly defined, and somewhat removed from downtown Philly (a dirty river even separates it). I would imagine the law school being one connected building within the campus to make this feel even more separate/closed, though I can't speak directly to that. Overall, loved going to school there and thought Philly was great.

absolutely - I sent them a request for a waiver yesterday, if I don't hear back by next Friday I'll probably just bite the bullet and pay.

Did you try to solicit?

Yeah I go to Penn and they responded with a generic "we don't solicit, make sure your undergrad transcript and LSAT are uploaded and you're registered for CRS"

FWIW, I tried to solicit and they told me no but then gave me a hidden waiver anyway.
I'm pretty sure I remembered this story (didn't that happen to you at NYU, too?) and that's what I was hoping for... Pretty sure we have similar numbers (now that my october scores are in, at least :D )

Nah, I didn't get NYU unfortunately.

I think my GPA and LSAT are each a tad higher than yours but yeah, we're similar.
So obviously this led me on a hunt for your scores - if I ID'ed your LSN account correctly (pretty confident...) then you did indeed outscore me by 1 point, and out-GPA'ed me by about .06... touche, sir.

Did anyone who went to the Atlanta LSAC Forum get the name of the Penn rep?

Did anyone do/is anyone planning to do the third optional essay (describe a time as a member of a team that you particularly excelled or were especially frustrated)?

I'm submitting a Why Penn that I'm happy with. The team experience option seems like a good way to highlight WE, but on the other hand I don't know if this is overkill or might even hurt if it comes across as forced.

I did all four and thought it was a good WE option. They give you all four options so they won't think it is overkill as long as you touch on other things in all of them. If you are being redundant in the essays, then there is no need to do all four.
Ok, cool. I think I will try my hand at it and see how it goes. Impressed that you tackled all four - I'm sure the adcomm will be as well! :)

I got a fee waiver today (a hidden one) which was such a sight for sore eyes. I was about to hit 'submit' and pay full ticket on the app.

Thanks, UPenn :)
