Re: NYU c/o 2019 Applicants (2015-2016)
I have no idea. I'll really have to look more into it if I get accepted to a NY school. I don't wanna sell my piece, nor do I wanna give up my right to carry it. And I don't wanna get stuck in NY biglaw without being able to assert my 2nd Amendment right even in my residence. This may be a consideration bigger than employment stats/preftige.Generally wrote:
Is that constitutional? lol For real though, didn't the DC gun law case in scotus strike down this type of thing? I may be very ignorant though, I didn't study that case in any detail.

I think it boils down to a, "I'd rather have it and never need it than need it and not have it" kind of deal.benwyatt wrote:I walk through Central Park at night all the time.Generally wrote:

ETA: I don't know why you are all so concerned about this? How many times have you had to produce and use a firearm where you live now?

Lived in several cities, including Detroit, and never once ran into a situation where I felt I needed a firearm on my person. Having one in the house is different, but never felt like I needed to be carrying.benwyatt wrote:ETA: I don't know why you are all so concerned about this? In my very limited experience in NYC and specifically Manhattan, I never felt in danger and that included wandering around early in the AM.

It also boils down to...$600 that I now have to find another home for. Btw, wouldn't actually be that heavy of a consideration, just an extreme inconvenience.doublehoohopeful wrote:I think it boils down to a, "I'd rather have it and never need it than need it and not have it" kind of deal.benwyatt wrote:I walk through Central Park at night all the time.Generally wrote:

I will start this by saying the following things:benwyatt wrote:But if you have never needed it, then what's the concern?doublehoohopeful wrote:I think it boils down to a, "I'd rather have it and never need it than need it and not have it" kind of deal.benwyatt wrote:I walk through Central Park at night all the time.Generally wrote:

At the end of the day, it's moot. You can't carry your weapons in NYC so if you do end up living here, you have 3 choices as I see it:
1. Carry anyway and risk going to prison.
2. Don't carry and be afraid that something might happen to you so you stay inside forever.
3. Don't carry and live your life knowing that, at worst, you might get your cellphone stolen one day.
I am a gun owner, but I believe in strong gun control laws.
It is safer to be alive now than in any point in human history and the chances that I will need a gun on me in order to protect my life or the lives of others are small.
The choice to carry concealed should not be taken lightly, and that if you do choose to carry, you have an obligation to consistently practice and carry as often as possible. For these reasons, I do not carry.
Regarding your question of not needing it to date, that is kind of a silly line of reasoning to make. I've never needed health insurance, so why should I buy it?
While the three options you offer aren't fairly presented, I see what you're getting at. Regarding point one, people choose to carry in illegal situations all of the time (see Chattanooga). Regarding point two, I choose not to carry, and I am not afraid to live my life unarmed. However, I do appreciate those who are willing to put the time, money, and effort into being responsible concealed carry permit holders. Regarding your third point, things a whole lot worse than losing your cellphone can and do happen.
