This. Definitely a good bargaining chip though.nickhalden wrote:Just remember that Emory's cost of attendance is comparable to any T14 (but without the employment outcomes). $70,000 is a little under a 50% tuition scholarship, but that doesn't take into account living expenses. In with 65k.. Not nearly enough to get me to come down to ATL, but hoping I can use it as a bargaining chip with BC/W&M/ND.

I'm in with a good scholarship via regular mail! I got the email about now looking at applications so I thought I had been passed over from the first wave and might be waitlisted. IF I got in I expected very little money. I think this makes Emory my first choice. I live in Georgia and so does a lot of my family, so being close to them is great. I just can't convey how surprised I was to see the letter in the mail so soon after the email, plus the scholarship.

Re: Emory: Class of 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 Cycle)
I can't seem to find any information on the grade distribution at Emory. The curve is 3.3, Honors at graduation is 3.45 (per each semester this is Dean's list), High Honors is 3.8, and dean's list for the semester is 3.45. Grades go from A+ to F. I'm just curious if there is a percentage of A's, B's, and C's and a max amount of D's and A+'s like at some schools. I know it doesn't really matter and that I should make plans assuming I'll finish median, but I always like to read the percentages.

Received an amazing scholarship over the weekend. Can I use it to negotiate with schools that are within +/- 4 spots from Emory in the rankings?

Just remember that Emory's COA is very high (high tuition and high COA). Peer schools know this, so you won't be able to negotiate with a raw, gaudy cash number. Take into account the COA discount rather than the cash figure when negotiating.

I've been looking at apartments and it doesn't seem that bad. If you're willing to have a roommate you can get places for $500-700. Groceries in Atlanta are the same as groceries in the suburbs I believe. Only the nightlife is more expensive than a lot of places. Am I missing something for the high col?nickhalden wrote:Yes!txlg689 wrote:Received an amazing scholarship over the weekend. Grew up in Atlanta suburbs and went to college at UGA. Some parts of atl are expensive compared to other parts of atl and of course atl is more expensive than much of the rest of ga. BUT I live in dc now and I cry in my heart everyday for atl prices.TetrisBlock wrote:I've been looking at apartments and it doesn't seem that bad. Re: Emory: Class of 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 Cycle)
For personal living, this is a great point. But schools will look at general (and probably school-quoted) COL costs rather than...wherever you're living in Atlanta for $500. Living in Athens (for instance) will always be cheaper than comparable living in Atlanta. In this situation, UGA would counter to a negotiation with how their cash-inferior scholarship is the better net discount. All of this to say - while negotiating, use your Emory scholarship as a percentage discount rather than a raw cash amount.TetrisBlock wrote:I've been looking at apartments and it doesn't seem that bad. In with $102k merit scholarship. Anybody else coming from the DC area?
And what would be a comparable target for negotiation at a Wash U or GW?

Re: Emory: Class of 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 Cycle)
I went ahead and applied for FAFSA for emory even though i haven't been accepted. i got an email saying my financial aid application was received. It referred to me as a student and said I was going to be assigned a financial adviser throughout my student experience (as opposed to "applicant").
It also had a link for the OPUS online student portal system - which I was able to create login credentials for by entering my birthday and SSN.
While in the portal though, under the admissions part when I clicked on "Admission Decision" it said unable to view at this time.
Is this just an automated email/thing that all applicants can do? so anxious that emory is snail mail only for decision lol thought i had hacked my way into some kind of status check with this OPUS - Admission section. sb please explain lol

It says in the admissions packet that you will be able to request a login 1 week after your admittance date. I'm guessing that means you will receive a packet in the next few days! But I'm not sure, because I haven't heard anyone saying that's a good way to status check. Georgetown does it that way. I wonder if we should add it to the op for people to try? It seems like something that we neurotic TLSers could confirm/deny if it works after just a few weeks of trying.kendallr12 wrote:I went ahead and applied for FAFSA for emory even though i haven't been accepted. i got an email saying my financial aid application was received. I submitted the last week of January. I'm not sure when I went complete it was either the first or second week of February. I got the results through regular mail. Even though I live an hour from Emory it took several days to get here (probably due to frozen roads?).
Try requesting your login information from emory's opus website! http://www.OPUS.emory.edu

It's more reasonable, but it's not surprisingly cheap or anything. Coming from DC it might be.HokieHi307 wrote:In with the exact same scholarship and a DC native.
