Rent is really getting ridiculous in Dallas. Not going to pretend it isn't an issue if you choose SMU. North Texas rent prices are rising at an absurd rate and there are no signs of slowing down construction of new luxury high-rises everywhere.

The Village still has some cheap places, and you certainly can find some cheap places if you look hard around Lower Greenville or far East Dallas. But you aren't going to find a decent 1BR for $500. A decent apartment near SMU will probably cost you at least $800 and probably closer to $1000 for a nice one. Forget about Uptown for anything less than $1200-1400.

Anybody had any luck leveraging Baylor scholarship offers to raise an SMU offer?

SMU will not budge on scholarships. They just won't.

SMU doesn't negotiate.

For a pricey private school, they sure are stingy. I still have to try. With a full-tuition scholarship to Baylor and about a half-scholly to SMU, I would think they would consider moving a little. I'll report back if I have any luck.

As far as housing goes, you really just have to do your research. I currently live in uptown in one of the many Gables communities for very very reasonable relative to other places in uptown. Just check every day once you get to about 2-3months out.

You can try but they won't consider. At least not in the last two cycles. It's not their policy. Maybe something will change this time around.

I didn't feel that they were stingy at all. 24k for being <25% GPA and slightly below median LSAT seemed pretty generous. I was still planning on a negotiating because it doesn't hurt, but I was pleasantly surprised with the offer they gave me. They gave me more than Baylor did, and Baylor is more expensive.

I'm hoping that a retake and a slightly higher LSAT MIGHT make them reconsider, but I've only heard what you say, bound.

BTW, I've never found a single bd in uptown for less than 950. You probs got a better deal tho

Strong leadership in a unique student organization (took them from broke and about to get shut down to loaded), but it's not like I cured cancer or was a nuclear physicist or anything  SMU is definitely in my top 2, and I suspect it's where I'll ultimately end up.

Stingy was probably a bit harsh. I mean they are offering less than others that are similar in the rankings/region. Here's to luck!

Good luck! Have you visited both schools? I loved my visit at Baylor, but the lower offer and anti-Baylor sentiment on here has sort of scared me off. I imagine it's incredibly hard though to justify turning down a full ride.

Because they know that SMU is an objectively better choice than Baylor.

I submitted on 12/10 and was complete a week later. Is it too early to be hearing back? 4.0 with an almost complete (will graduate in May) M.S. in bioethics- also a 4.0. 150 on LSAT without studying at all, which I know isn't great. I was pre-med, started the M.S., got hooked on health law. Lots of leadership experience, alumni at SMU, and work at a law firm in downtown Dallas as a legal assistant right now.

Im not admissions officer, but I'd say you're not gonna get in with that LSAT. Retake that.. don't waste a 4.0

dude please retake. SMU will give you a lot of money if you increase that even to just above their 25th.

I actually think he will get in with that LSAT... which is even worse because a 4.0 screams out for a retake with an LSAT that low.

The problem with that score with your other credentials is that they will probably know you didn't study for it. They may think you just like to wing it and not take things seriously. Retake, stat. Or write a really impressive addendum explaining yourself. But don't write one without a convincing reason.

I got accepted with $30k/year with a 161. I did an addendum. Albeit for a different reason, but an addendum may set you apart.

even though SMU doesn't negotiate, do you guys think that if they offered me a certain amount, then I retook the LSAT in February, they'd up my scholarship offer up one package (if I don't get 30, obviously)? They don't negotiate with other schools as leverage, but would they use increased stats?

This really shouldn't/can't happen if you're serious about this... A 4.0 going through that course-load at SMU is a big deal - but you're kind of throwing that away applying with an LSAT that's essentially a cold diagnostic.

Anyway, checking in. Does the SMU status checker change at all?

heyyyyy

and I've been complete since 1/2. Based on previous years, there's more than likely gonna be a February wave. If I get the 30k package I'll most likely go here cuz I can live at home and I LOVE smu, as well as Dallas.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
