LawGirlAtx wrote:Checking in. Hoping some 1Ls will have some feedback on my situation.

LSAT: 161 (yeah, yeah I know it's low)
GPA: Cumulative is 3.2. HOWEVER, my first semester in college my dad died, and my house was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Did an addendum to why that messed up my GPA for that year. After that I maintained a 3.8 in my major and an overall 3.5.

Softs/other factors: URM, older applicant though not super old. I'm 28, will be 29 when I start law school. Twelve years' work experience, with ten of that being full-time. Three years' work experience as a Paralegal. LOR's from three attorneys that I've worked with/for. Disadvantaged childhood, touched upon in my p/s. TX resident (born in Mississippi), neither of those help nor hurt I assume. No tie to MO except a cousin who lives in KC.

I was thinking of retaking the LSAT as my GPA is what it is at this point. I've taken it twice (12/13 and 6/14) and both times with only a difference of one point. I had a private tutor last year, and while it made me feel more prepared, I don't think it actually helped at all. I work full-time so it's a little difficult to study, but I can make it work if I have to.

Any feedback/advice you have is helpful!
I agree with Scott that you are likely in with those numbers, probably with a small-medium sized scholarship. Def do the addendum because those are very legit circumstance for your grades to suffer. Also agree with Scott that retaking wouldn't be the worst thing, but that's a personal choice.

Also I kind of think that being from Mississippi should for sure be mentioned in your PS. I don't know that it helps, but I kind of suspect it does in certain circumstances. I am from a southern state and the admissions people seemed intrigued by that. We have tons of kids here from Cali and Ny, but I don't know anyone from Mississippi, so it goes to diversity in a way as WASHU seems to take a slightly more holistic approach than most schools not named YHS. Good luck!

Just to be clear, if they want to do the interview they'll get with me right? It's not like Northwestern where you're expected to schedule one yourself. Correct?

Correct - they will send you an email requesting you schedule an interview.

Plus I bet as an URM from Mississippi you could write one hell of a diversity statement.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. My p/s was about the value of education and how growing up in the most impoverished state in the country made me realize that education is "a liberator from poverty and an enabler of opportunity." Also mentioned that none of my grandparents graduated high school and only one of my parents did. I'm sure I laid it on a little thick, but I'm sure they'll pick up what I'm layin' down.

Good luck everyone applying this cycle!

Not to be THAT guy, but... Is this you?
http://lawschoolnumbers.com/LawGirlAtx

If so, why are the numbers and the story on that account so different?
Thanks for pointing out the transposed numbers. If you note, I started that account in 8/13. Since then I've decided to shy away from mentioning mental health issues after my dad's death from lymphoma followed by having my house destroyed by one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history six weeks later. I think sticking to just cancer, and newfound homelessness on my 19th birthday AND first day of college was *quite* enough. After feedback from friends I was steered to stay away from mentioning any of my issues with Bipolar disorder during the following year. It's not uncommon for it to manifest in late teenage years, especially after trauma. I was told it was just too depressing and just too much to go into. After reflection I agree. I also felt that with the death of Robin Williams just weeks before aps going in it could seem too contrived and more as if I were taking a stance on an issue rather than telling my story.

I'm going to take your comment as "THAT guy" as honest feedback, and nothing more. I would just point out in the future you may want to use some professional courtsey when communicating with peers. A PM would probably be the best way to go.

Not cool dude. Many people on this site prefer anonymity. If the information is different, so what? I'm sure she has her reasons and it's really none of your business.

It would be one thing if she was coming on here trolling and giving false information, but that is clearly not the case.

I have edited out the link to help keep you anonymous. I apologies that it seemed harsh, I was genuinely curious if it was you just based on the different story, and largely different number. In terms of being anonymous I assumed it was not a major concern of yours since you used the same username for both accounts. Once again, I apologize.

I wish you the best of luck this cycle.

Simmer down 0Ls, simmer down.
You're already on an essentially anon message board, and tbf, having the same TLS screenname and LSN screenname doesn't really lead anyone to believe that you're trying to remain anon.

For $7 I'd see any NFL team play.

Ask the class of 1999-2001 how cool it was to go watch the Rams in the Dome back then! If you think the Broncos light it up now -- you should have seen the Rams then! The fall from grace has been truly hard to watch -- but I still do -- every week!

By the way -- I was stationed up in Chicago in 2006 and went to the Bears/Saints NFC Championship game -- never been so cold in my life -- but it was cool as hell to experience Soldier Field in the playoffs. Last and only time I ever rooted for a Chicago team!

Wow -- just got the acceptance email!

Numbers: 161/3.75
Soft that probably had a big impact with my lower LSAT: Retiring E9 with several combat deployments over a 20 year military career.

I grew up in a poor St. Louis neighborhood and use to play in Forest Park as a kid. I remember staring at the beautiful buildings/campus and watching the students walk by thinking those must be the smartest and certainly the luckiest people in the world (only world I knew was St. Louis at the time). You have no idea how truly humbling and special it is for me to be accepted to WashU.

Woo, congrats Kev! How exciting to finally be one of those people on that beautiful campus! Who knows, maybe you'll inspire a kid from your old neighborhood.
