Well the held thread seems all but dead but I feel very confused, held 3/22 no ding no WL, are any other held ppl left? JS0 also. Seeing people who just got wait listed get interview offers makes me be like huh? How can I still have no decision if WL people are hearing back? Can't be good...

I'm really confused about what is going on with this wait list/JS1 wave.

Harvard sent out its wait list email to us on Friday, and now on Tuesday some of us are getting JS1s? Last year JS1s started going out at the end of May. I thought they would wait at least until after May 1 to see how many admitted students deposited and committed to attending before beginning to send JS1s to us on the wait list.

So why the wait list and then a few days later a JS1 invite?? Why not just a JS1 and no wait list? What is going on Harvard?????

I know it sounds ridiculous, but could it be YP?

Haven't they stated that they are interviewing more applicants this year? Perhaps they are just getting the ball rolling earlier.

I'm pretty new around here, and certainly not an expert in such things, but could it possibly be to protect against deferrals?

...although Occam's razor tells me that this is a much more likely explanation.

I don't see how that explains what we're seeing.

That's an interesting theory, but it's probably not correct. Harvard waitlists so many people simply because they can. Every school wishes they could take however many applicants they need and then, if places open up, just go back to the pool and get equally qualified people to fill the spots. Most schools wouldn't get away with it; Harvard can and does.

What Helix said is probably correct. But we won't know for sure until we see the results from this JS1 wave. Will there be JS2s from this wave in May as we would expect from the waitlist or will they be later in April? If they are in April, it would be quite strange.

I'm starting to think that maybe they plan on interviewing a majority of the waitlist and just sent out the first batch of invites now. It doesn't seem like something they would do, but it would make sense as to why they started the JS1s so early this year.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to sound unappreciative or insensitive. I truly am grateful that I received an interview invite. I'm just afraid of getting my hopes up, only to find out, for example, that this year everyone on the wait list is being interviewed and it doesn't mean I'm any closer to a potential acceptance.

I highly doubt they're going to interview the whole waitlist.. why do we think this? just 'cause they started js1 off wl early ?

175/4.0 here, still JS0. Enjoy your continued hopes and esteemed special snowflake status! :D

(Seriously - congrats to all the new JS1s.)

I don't see how that explains what we're seeing.
Waitlisting students who may have been admitted to Y or S and no longer interested in H to see if they respond that they'd like to be on the waitlist. Instant removal of many people who are simply uninterested in attending H.

I doubt whether that is the correct explanation, but it would certainly explain the fast WL->JS1's (unless people who didn't respond that they'd like to remain on the WL also received JS1's, but I don't think that happened).

Nah, I'm not. I've come to terms with my place at the left end of the bell curve.

Though highly unlikely, I thought it might be possible because of 1) It's very early to start with js1s off the wait list and 2) In the Harvard blog at the beginning of the application cycle they said that they would be conducting more interviews this year than in the past. So there will be more people than previous years who are interviewed and not later accepted (assuming that they accept about the same amount of people as in previous years).

Do you think HLS treats non-hispanic URM as a URM or they have a special place in their hearts for NHURM ? No other school has really shown to give such a boost but it's clear HLS wants at least one..

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
