Yes, but SMU doesn't give out very many big scholarships. If you want job security in Texas, go for UT.FallingHigher wrote:Is there any news on the scholarship information? I got into UT and will most likely be going there so I want to go ahead and lease an apt. before they all get booked, but if SMU pulls through with a good scholly I might be persuaded to stay in dallas.

Does anyone have info on the Sumners Scholarship. On previous threads it made it sound like if you graduated with your scholarship then you had a great shot at big law. I am in the same situation as the poster above. Been accepted to UT but the Sumner scholarship sounds really good if true. No debt+good shot at big law.

From what I've read (on this site and elsewhere) being a Sumners Scholar carries a lot of weight when applying for jobs. The downside is, you have to stay at the top of the class for all 3 years or you lose it, so that seems pretty risky if it is your only reason for choosing SMU over UT. Have you already applied? Deadline is end of next week, and I think they start selecting finalists at the end of Feb.pollo hermanos wrote:Does anyone have info on the Sumners Scholarship. ^ Yeah that is what I have gathered as well. I have applied. Have you? You seem to have the numbers to have gotten into plenty of T-14s. Did you want to especially stay in Dallas?

The Sumners board can be tricky, however. They will select individuals using random criteria that no one entirely understands. They ran Sumners applications for my (undergraduate) school and I was a finalist in the interview. They chose some really odd students as recipients (ones that not even my Honors professors thought would win).
I'm happy to answer what little I know about Sumners from my undergrad experience via PM. From what I've gathered from past law applicants (and the application itself), it seems nearly identical.

I have applied. I am married w/ a daughter, which played a big role in my decision. We picked a city that we could stay in after law school to give her stability and so that my husband could start his career. SMU was just the right fit for us.pollo hermanos wrote:^ Yeah that is what I have gathered as well. I have applied. Have you? You seem to have the numbers to have gotten into plenty of T-14s. Are they perhaps waiting to see who gets the full-tuition named scholarships before they make any decisions?aep1989 wrote:Soooo, about those scholarships SMU...

I don't think so. Sumners won't even start interviewing until around a month from now and I don't even know what the Hughes winner(s) will be announced. Ingram said that they sent their scholarship declarations out last week.mg7 wrote:Are they perhaps waiting to see who gets the full-tuition named scholarships before they make any decisions?aep1989 wrote:Soooo, about those scholarships SMU...

Jxander can you please PM me the info you have on the Sumners scholly, I'm interested to know what you mean by a weird selection of applicants for that particular scholly.

My status checker says something was mailed the 28th but doesn't say what. I'm guessing it's the initial scholarship offer. I live in Houston so I'm not sure why it still hasn't gotten to my house (almost) two weeks later. I did apply for the Sumners Scholarship but don't consider myself a strong candidate for it. Honestly, I'm really strongly leaning towards a different law school at the moment and would almost be relieved to not get it.

Could everyone who has been accepted or denied for either ft/pt post their numbers? Applying next cycle.

162, 3.2 from Wellesley College, F, URM (Mexican)
Accepted into PT program and then randomly was called last week to offer me a position in the FT program. This was so weird to me because I noted on my application that I strongly preferred the FT program and they still gave me the PT.
btw, has anyone ever heard of this being the case? It seemed weird to me because according to admissions they will evaluate your FT application first and then if you're rejected they will then consider your PT application....
NO SE!

Re: SMU c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013 cycle)
Applications are way down this year so they could be offering the ft now because they aren't filling up like they had hoped for. I read that ls apps are down 24.6% from a year ago and this year less people will apply to law school than were admitted two years ago. Its a good year to apply to ls. Hopefully the trend continues through next cycle when I apply.Well_he_did_not wrote:162, 3.2 from Wellesley College, F, URM (Mexican)
