Did someone say something about getting in-state tuition after 1L? I know California is pretty liberal about that sort of thing and Texas is not (surprise on both).

Derp, I just checked their tuition website. So as long as we're not dependent on anyone, have our drivers' licenses/housing squared away for 12 months, and stay in GA for our first summer we've got a pretty good shot at switching to in-state, right?

I didn't have to do it myself, but many classmates got in-state tuition. UGA even had a meeting about it during school to make sure people knew what to do. It's far from uncommon.

That's great. I know UT of Austin has a typical "you ain't from 'round here, boy" kind of attitude. Sorta related, Georgetown is now preventing part-timers from switching to full-time even though the acceptance standards are starting to level out... it seems like most schools have a policy that you're stuck with whatever status you had when you applied. It's nice to see that some schools recognize that your situation can change over three years.

Hmmmm. UGA is starting to become a serious contender for me. I honestly applied because they gave me a fee waiver and I thought I could use them as leverage against Tulane or the other Louisiana schools. But my quick initial research shows that they seem to place just as many grads as Emory into ATL Big law (Emory is probably more portable outside of ATL), combined with ridiculously low COL that I should have covered by the time I start school... if I pay sticker, that'll leave me at mid 5 figure debt at graduation. If they throw some money my way, I think I'm sold.

I was serfing threads last night and I remember one in particular (I think the subject had something to do with UA vs. UGA) that was really emphasizing how bad the ATL market has been hit recently (approx. 2010-2012). Do you or anyone else know about this drop and/or how it is doing now?

Probably the Emory/UGA thread. From Emory's perspective its been a rough couple years and the students are hurting from Emorys lack of connections to non-Atl markets in Georgia and the degree not being quite as portable as hoped.

If you go to UGA, make sure you don't mind staying in the state.

Yeah, a collapsing market definitely throws some water on that plan. I forget how bad it is outside of Louisiana... thankfully our backwards civil code helps protect us from those T14 yankees. Then again, outside of Maritime, there aren't a lot of "big law" opportunities.

FWIW, my "research" consisted of clicking on the websites of the big national firms and using the school search to see roughly how many people came from each school. Emory and UGA were generally even and had the most. If you combine Vandy, Duke, UVA and some T14 then that would be an equal third category. The last few gaps were filled with Tulane, Alabama, Florida, the state schools, etc. Not very scientific nor representative of the current class of 2013's prospects... just trying to see how far the alumni network reached.

Eandy? You're a 3L... you're probably in the best position to answer this question

I was wondering if anyone knows what one's placement in the class must be in order to be competitive in 2L OCI and have a shot at ATL firms. I was thinking top 10% just from looking at other posts. Thanks in advance.

I'm 165/<2.5 GPA from top undergrad and what I like to hope are good softs. I'm a ways out of undergrad but I really didn't think I'd hear this quickly with the GPA I burdened myself with.

Submitted and received 11.29; complete something like 12.3; admitted 12.12.12.

Hope for the low GPAs!

I am in the same boat. Applied ED Nov 1, Went complete on the 7th, been under review since then too.... and still nothing.

Out of curiosity for those of you who have been admitted, did you apply ED or regular admission? Oh and congrats! And has anyone applied ED and was accepted as "regular" admission instead?

My insight into the Atlanta market comes from my family and friends, and absolutely NO firsthand experience... so take it for what it is worth. I come from a family that is speckled with lawyers, all working in Atlanta, and they don't seem to be overly pessimistic about things. When I originally told them I was going to attend UF, they were more pessimistic than now that I am going to attend UGA. They admit it is a good bit harder to get a job than when they applied, but they told me the best thing I can do is get a UGA degree (which most of them have, so they may be biased, but they seem to think having one would even help them help me) for a decent price. Hey, it's all one big gamble and I'd rather be a bulldog than anything else. Glory, glory

Sadly (for this question), all of my 2L friends are in the 10%. They pretty much all have 2L SAs. I know that some people outside the top 10% have 2L SAs, but I don't know how many.

Ugh. Who else got the email just now saying they'd be considered for merit scholarships, but that awards won't be given out until mid-February? I don't want to wait that long when other schools are already letting me know -- C'mon, UGA, ain't nobody got time for that!

Got the email too, UGA seems to be (at least in my experience so far) ahead of every timeline they've given me so I'm hopeful it'll be sooner, but I'm ED so I really doubt I get any.

True! If it helps any, though, I was glancing through last year's thread and it sounded like acceptances kept rolling out throughout the holidays and the new year season, so it could be any day before they start releasing more!

My year they were really generous, and I feel that's probably still the case.
