What do you predict for a drop in ranking? I will say 35 by next year and into the 40's the following.

I can't see them being ranked better than 30, or really even in that spot given the other schools there, if the current trend continues, so I'm going with 35 as well.

do you have any idea how ridiculous you sound? sorry buddy, you are not entitled to a full scholarship. You are entitled to what the school wants to offer you. I am sure the admissions department at IU is more qualified to handle the admissions cycle than you are, therefore I feel confident any decision they make has been well thought out and is more than likely in the best interest of the school. I can think of a few reasonable explanations for the lower money offers this cycle -- you're post basically says "OMG this is not good for me, therefore it must be bad for the school too! what a terrible decision to make!"

I too am a bit disappointed in the amount of scholarship money being awarded this cycle, but I don't think a slide in the US News rankings will have too much impact on stimulating more scholarship money. IU-Bloomington is one of the more outspoken critics to the entire ranking game (and their points are valid), so falling to 35 is not going to upset them as much as it would for any other mid-20 school. As such, they are more likely to scale back on the scholarships if finances justify it, regardless of the ranking consequences...it just sucks for all of us c/o 2015 applicants.

I agree that no one is assured a full ride, or entitled to one. But it is disappointing to see IUB take this route this year. I was seriously considering IUB, because of their scholarships and my being in state, but now that it will be only marginally cheaper, for what I would call far smaller job opportunities post graduation, I just don't think I can justify attending.

Rough estimates but it will still cost over 100 grand to attend with my current scholarship. I really love IUB (my alma mater) but I can't justify 100 grand for a school that places solely in Indiana.

On the other hand, from the school's perspective this is probably smart. Right now, I think we can agree, IUB's ranking is artificially high. So why try and raise it even more? By taking a break from making it rain for a few years, they can save money and have their ranking stabilize and then can return to throwing huge amounts of cash at people when it will actually help them. Their median is 167 this year, I think. Did anyone expect a bunch of 168-170s to attend IUB? Those numbers compete with T14 and schools like WUSTL who give out large scholarships.

So while I am disappinted I applied one year too late, this is probably a winning strategy to increase their rank over an extended period of time.

This is what I was thinking... you've articulated in a better way.

imo, locking down four 167s could be more advantageous to IU-B than trying to entice one 169-170 since we're talking about medians when it comes to ranking.

it probably is a more sound strategy in the long term but if that is the case I can't imagine why they would give out the massive scholarships they did last year. Its not like it was just the 170+ people that got them, according to LSN was very much across the board. What someone else said about people being deferred last year makes more sense, they probably have the LSAT scores they need in their pocket already and high GPA's are a dime a dozen so they can fill out their class without the big scholarships. I bet the rain returns next year. Just bad luck for us.

It seems like IU-B is still giving out the scholarships, just more judiciously. I certainly can't blame them for that. It's like they "make it rain" in order to give a fast rankings jump and increase applicant numbers, then start giving the huge money to the best applicants and the deferred from last year. More sustainability is exactly what they need.

Consider:

-Deferred students from last year already help maintain the 166 median (also likely these students have high GPA as well)
-IU also has a program for IU undergrads - if you have a 3 eight or higher you are admitted to IUB without LSAT
-Now that there is already pretty firm GPA median groundwork laid, they can offer extreme splitters, like the 167/2.5, 10K a year all while maintaining the same medians garnered last year without the huge money spent

Also, extreme splitters are more likely to matriculate because they likely wont have as many other attractive offers

I wouldn't be surprised to see some of those scholarships rise as things progress and IU-B gets a better idea of what they need. Last years money pile certainly gave students some easy decisions, and that was the problem. Does anyone know how many deferrals were handed out? Anecdotal evidence seems to indicate it was a rather large number. I'm guessing they just don't want to keep playing the "ride this class into next year" game. If IU-B appeals to you for any reason other than scholarship, stick it out and see what happens as we get closer to the end of the cycle.

but

177 / 3.1 and 167 / 3.65 = $5k/year?

the $10k/yr was probably OOS; The $5k/yr is probably in-state.

A 3.65 gpa is below median, the same as a 2.5 and 3.1 are. Some schools have a sliding scale of quality, but since Indiana doesn't really seem to have a gpa floor, they just care if you are above or below median.* Same for LSAT. A 180 LSAT is going to help an otherwise 166 median as much as a 167 will so attracting applicants similarly makes sense.

In today via emial. 10k per year, OOS (3.25,169). Echoing the thoughts of most other people on the thread, probably wouldn't even have applied had I known the scholarship #'s would be so drastically decreased this cycle. Good luck to everyone else still waiting.
