+1
Whatever else one might criticize about the school, the admissions office at UT is top notch.

How long after submitting the app did it take for people to get the status checker?

Don't know if this helps anyone's calculus, but at UT law day, Monica Ingram the dean of admissions said that although they are only allowed to matriculate 35% non residents, they actually hand out more acceptances to non-residents than residents. This is because residents are much more likely to accept.
On the other hand, she said in an interview in the book "how to get into the top law schools" that admitted residents numbers tend to be slight lightly lower than non-residents (roughly a point on the LSAT and a tenth or two on GPA).
Hope this helps!

Best thing about UT has been the expediency of merit awards. No need to drag it out until March/April like some other schools.

True. Early merit awards could only be better if one is admitted early also guaranteed a merit award. Looks like I was shutout. Received call 10/29 and admittance package 11/1. Looks like sticker for me.

My phone number was cut off in my submitted application. I hope they don't hold that against me.

So does anyone know how useful the status checker is? Like will it actually tell me under review/decision rendered or should I stop obsessively checking it?

They state that the status checker will update a few days after you receive a decision. (like Michigan) Mine updated to admitted Oct 27. on Nov 2 or 3.
ETA, ya so it's pretty useless after it says complete.

Mine did the same thing and I freaked out during the first wave of applicants thinking they dinged me for the carelessness. But I'm in w/ dean's scholly and out of state tuition waiver. There's hope.

Yeah, I sent them an email with an apology and a correction and they sent back a form letter O.o
I guess this happens a lot.

They said at the law day that if you apply early decision you'll have a decision before christmas break, although a hold is also one of those possible decisions.

By the way, the hold email said they "received approximately 1,500 files for Early Decision."

It kinda seems like a lot this early on. They usually receive about 5,000 applications total. I don't know though, maybe this is normal?
