I had a 2.1 and 169 with C&F issues, and they gave me 25k per year. I'd be shocked if you didn't get money with that score.Marionberry wrote:Kal, since you seem to be pretty knowledgeable about SMU, two questions:
1) Does a 171, 3.0 with a reasonably compelling GPA addendum have any chance at scholly money.

Does it make a difference that I now mentor at risk youths about why they shouldn't kill for sport?

I'd like to point out what might possibly be a glaring difference between you and Marion, but I'm not for sure.

Re: SMU 2011
So I have made a seperate "What are my chances" post, but I am wondering what other people think of my chances. I will be applying early with 3.86 gpa and 157 LSAT. SMU is my top school (practically only school) I want to go so I would be crushed if I didn't get in. If it's worth retaking LSAT in december I would but if my numbers are good enough then I will apply now.

part time or full time? pt, you have a chance now. ft, you need to retake and get into the mid 160's.KAM wrote:So I have made a seperate "What are my chances" post, but I am wondering what other people think of my chances. Full-time. I saw how the 25th percentile of lsat score is 158 so even though mine is 1 socre below I thought my GPA above the 75th percentile would make up for it. I don't even mind being waitlisted and then accepted.

What do you love so much about it?SMU is my top school (practically only school) I want to go so I would be crushed if I didn't get in.
I'm not trying to be funny, or challenge you, I am genuinely interested. I LOVE the school on paper, but was a little underwhelmed when I visited.

Re: SMU 2011
Well I have family and friends in the Dallas area and I have talked to quite a bit of lawyers who say it is a great school. I also plan on living in the Dallas area after school and SMU places well in that area. I have lived in the same small town my whole life so this will be a big step for me moving away. I want to stay as close as possible to home and this is the best school within 5 hours of where I live. I have never visited the campus but have been to Dallas hundreds of times and I love it. Why weren't you very impressed?Capitol A wrote:What do you love so much about it?SMU is my top school (practically only school) I want to go so I would be crushed if I didn't get in.

not necessarily. I got in early action full-time w/o breaking 160. no urm. High gpa's can make at least a little noise.Burgstaller04 wrote:part time or full time? pt, you have a chance now. ft, you need to retake and get into the mid 160's.KAM wrote:So I have made a seperate "What are my chances" post, but I am wondering what other people think of my chances. Please don't get me wrong, the campus is absolutely gorgeous, and the neighborhood that it's in is one of the nicest I've seen in my life. Everyone there was super nice, etc etc etc. I have absolutely nothing negative to say about SMU whatsoever. I think I just had this idea in my mind that I was going to be blown away by how perfect it was, and that didn't exactly happen. All this being said, I think if I get offered any scholly, there is a strong chance I will attend (despite my 'best school for cyclists' thread); for some similar reasons to the ones you mentioned. I'm not from TX, but I love the state, particularly Dallas (you can't beat the "park cities" or uptown). Combine this with the professional opportunities for myself and my wife in Dallas, and it's really a great fit for me. I think I was more or less hoping you would be able to blow me away with great reasons to attend.
Hopefully we'll be classmates next year.

Haha, I didn't even think about that. I'm a black male, so that might have made a difference.kalvano wrote:Thirteen wrote:I had a 2.1 and 169 with C&F issues, and they gave me 25k per year. Re: SMU 2011
You want good reasons to go to SMU?
It's the only law school that directly serves one of the largest metro areas in the USA. And Dallas is a huge business market.
Yes, a pretty campus and nice area and all that is important, but in the end, it's the job prospects that count. SMU isn't perfect by any means, but out of those schools in that lower T50, I'd be willing to bet it has some of the best opportunities available.

Re: SMU 2011
I just sent in my application! Excited but nervous. Not as secure as I would like to be with my score but I'm just hoping my GPA will do it for me. If worse comes to worst I will either go to Texas Tech or consider taking LSAT again in summer and apply next year, just hope I wont have too. Does anyone know the date that EA decisions are made?

Take a year and score higher versus Texas Tech.
You should hear back by the end of January.

I'm certain you're right, and I know I would love to live in Dallas after graduation, so that's why it's certainly one of my top choices.it's the job prospects that count. Yes, I'm going to apply to Baylor just because it's free but their 25th percentile LSAT is 160 so I thought my chances would be pretty slim there.Capitol A wrote:KAM-Have you thought about Baylor? I'm not sure about Waco, but I think Baylor would be a great education.

Yeah, I checked the box on the application that said to consider my application for Spring 2012 if I wasn't accepted. What are your numbers? Are you applying early to SMU?
