The admitted student reception was pretty helpful. I had a good conversation with a 3L who was very upfront about the employment situation for this year's class. He had a job lined up at a big firm, (by Vegas standards) but said that there were many in the top of his class who hadn't found anything yet. He also said that paid summer work for the 1L year was pretty rare (most do externships). Basically, most of the people who landed jobs did it with their networking and interviewing skills; class rank does not guarantee a decent offer. I also spoke with Dean White and he genuinely sems like a really cool guy. As far as the school itself, I would definitely be happy attending there. After talking with current students and some of the professors, it seems like an environment that I would fit into pretty well. As usuaggie said, there are certain parts of the campus that appear run-down, but the law building is not one of them. Actually, most of the UNLV facilities were pretty nice, but two things bring down the asthetics of the campus IMO: there are some complete shithole apartments that are located almost inside the campus, and there is a lot of brown grass. On the bright side, the new fitness center is amazing and the UG library is equally awesome, but I guess those facilities only matter if you plan on using them. I have visited twice this month a learned quite a bit on both occasions, so I can try to answer questions for those who couldn't make it. Feel free to ask.....

Just as an aside:

The UG library provides some more quiet and comfy study sessions than the law library. Unless you need books on the shelf, studying there is probably a better idea. Plus you can mingle with the undergrads, if you so desire.

The campus varies wildly in terms of niceness. The student union, UG library, Gym, and Law School are some of the nicest buildings on campus. The English building, business college, and chem building are some of the dumpiest.

The neighborhood is fairly shady, though not the worst of what Vegas has to offer. Vegas is an odd town: You might have mansions within a couple blocks of places like UNLV. Some of the largest law firms are located within about five miles of UNLV, though the surrounding neighborhood there isn't much better.

The brown grass will change come summer, though living in the middle of the desert we do have watering restrictions. There's a move to make the campus more water-friendly, and brown grass sometimes comes as a result of that.

I hope most of the folks who went to the ASD were able to stay for Sunday, as the weather got much better. The dean emailed me today and said there will be another ASD April 24th for those who are yet to be admitted or want to come back.

I am so glad you guys liked it when you visited. That makes me feel so much better. So far I have only had terrific interactions with the administration, which helps a lot. I was thinking of finding a cheap junket to hop out there in the next few weeks, but I'm not good enough at poker to play for 5 hours a day without losing my shirt, so I guess that's not going to work. I'm thinking about pricelining a trip for the fiancee and I by the end of March. I have to accept the scholarship by April 1st. Who is planning on attending now? Has anyone decided for sure?

I couldn't make it for the 27th, I don't really want to spend a lot of money on trips until I have a better idea of what is going on. Right now my primary concern is to graduate, which I am now constantly worrying about due to a mistrust of my school's handling of paperwork, and hardcore senioritus in all my classes.

I will still probably be at the next ASD in April.

Haha. Sort of. Gaming Law seems to focus more on getting licensed, vetting the future owners, navigating the administrative rules involved in running the casino and whatnot. Gaming Management is probably closer to DeNiro, and is a UG option in the business college.

They actually have several (four or five) classes about Gaming Law - far more than any law school I've seen. They also have a dedicated gaming law journal, and there is talk about adding an LLM in gaming several years from now.

I wonder if they mean that. In UG we usually get them the week before, but even that wouldn't leave much money to move. If it were me, I'd just put everything on credit and pay it off when the lump sum disbursement hits.

They may be able to work something out, however. I'm sure it's a common enough request.

Probably quite. If I remember correctly, Wolfpack goes to UNR, which is our sister school up north. I don't know that the programs cut will be identical at UNLV, but something similar happening is basically inevitable.

PS: I think I may be able to get it, but I wouldn't want to tie myself into PI work. Even though I plan on PI, I don't want to limit my options. It would feel a bit unethical to take the scholarship only to work at a law firm upon graduation.....

It might be worth checking on. That $5000 summer stipend and the travel stiped are both pretty cool.
