Our entering class managed a skirmish with the Columbians last cycle. It was fun while it lasted, but Booyakasha and I had to go in and do damage control. The crazy thing to keep in mind is what a small community this is. Now, we all have friends up there, and I've been drinking in Morningside Heights half a dozen times. As for BU, students tend to disperse more than Fordham students do. 96% of us want to stay in NYC (our first choice market), so that makes sense. A Fordham degree travels best for public interest kids. I can go pass the CA bar and work at a nonprofit in San Francisco if the desire strikes, and the people who talked about our alumni network are right; Fordham grads are everywhere in the city. I've heard the claim that they are in every V100 firm, but I don't really care enough about biglaw to go see if it's true. (Certainly, probably every V100 firm that has a NYC office.)
Here is the deal with BU, though: They have more money than we do, so they can give bigger scholarships. I've seen high GPA 164s get half rides there, and Fordham rarely gives out that much money. Our school just can't, so we can't buy people with higher numbers. As our endowment grows, I expect this to change, but for now, people come here for love and not for money. I have numerous friends who turned down $$ from other schools to pay sticker here. I did the same, and if I ever regret that choice, I will happily bear the risk.
Please note: there is no BU bashing contained herein. I visited the school and met with an adcomm there, and came away with a favorable impression. If you want to go to school in the Boston area and won't get into Harvard, BU is your credited response. BC is pretty, but it's just too suburban, IMO. (Keep in mind, this is coming from someone who would fault BLS for being too suburban, lol).
I also hope we get a quarter in biglaw this year. Our usually rate was 33-40%, before the bubble. Whenever I get real numbers, I will share them.
