That's exactly the predicament I'm in - UVA is not a school I'd consider seriously without somewhat serious merit aid. So without knowing that, I'm having a hard time deciding whether or not to do ASW. And, based on my #s, I would've thought I'd get something.

Right there with you, do you think emailing or calling would help speed along the process? Input from anyone out there with experience dealing with UVA aid?testaker wrote:That's exactly the predicament I'm in - UVA is not a school I'd consider seriously without somewhat serious merit aid. Word on the street is if you have leverage or a competing offer, email. If you don't you're gonna have to wait until April after the first deposit deadline.FlowBro wrote:Right there with you, do you think emailing or calling would help speed along the process? Waitlisted. Only applied because of the fee-waiver. Withdrawn.

Heard from a few sources that merit scholly's for those with late deposit deadline will not come out until early deposit deadline (4/5) passes.
I guess they want to see what they yield off their current pending merit offers

Congrats to all that are in! Its possible this is frowned upon, but since you guys are the UVA experts, what do you think my chances are next cycle, ED Sept 1st: 2.8; 176. Thanks in advance and congrats again!

Specifically they will be reallocating money during the week of 4/8-4/12. They likely won't have any money left after that week. (email if you've been accepted and haven't gotten any money yet...you have to email Dean Richard, not financial aid).Jaqen wrote:Sucks but not unexpected.FlowBro wrote:Heard from a few sources that merit scholly's for those with late deposit deadline will not come out until early deposit deadline (4/5) passes.

LSNs is your friend. Current graphs for this cycle and last cycle say UVA has never rejected a 176. You're acceptance/waitlisting will depend on your grade trends, your statement, and any other softs.Clearlynotstefan wrote:Thanks for the promising news! Did you send a Why UVA? If not, this has to be a YP.Jpreece59 wrote:Waitlisted. 171/4.1+
I was also waitlisted (172/4.06) and had not sent a Why UVA. I didn't realize how prevalent YPing was at UVA so I thought my numbers would make me a lock. I have since realized the error of my ways and sent a sincere LOCI addressing the "Why UVA" question. I haven't received an admissions offer in the two weeks since, but I'm hoping it stopped the bleeding a little bit. We'll see...

Been complete for almost two months now. My numbers are low for UVA (even as a URM)
Any thoughts on sending them a LOCI now? Anyone had success with this tactic? (Sending one prior to a decision). Also interested on yours or others' Why UVA reasons. I find that writing a very good why T14 is relatively hard since so many of their attributes are so similar.
Thanks!

I delivered my second LOCI and was admitted that same day. Definitely do it.

In my opinion, if you have something worth updating the school about you should send the letter. UVA seems to really care about your commitment to their school and keeping in touch is a good way to display your enthusiasm for the school. I would add, however, that the LOCIs should be more than "I'm still interested. Please admit me." Make sure you have some new accomplishment worth sharing.JayJones78 wrote:Semi related:MAHamlin wrote:Did you send a Why UVA? If not, this has to be a YP.Jpreece59 wrote:Waitlisted. 171/4.1+

Regarding reasons for Why UVA, that's really an answer only personal research can provide. Spend some time investigating the school's clinics and programs. Look at professor profiles and see if there is a professor with expertise in an area of genuine interest to you. What about location. UVA is East Coast. Do you want to stay East Coast? Are you currently East Coast? UVA is not located in a large metro area like many other top schools. Is this a plus or minus for you?
For me personally, I made note of a clinic the school offers that deals directly with my previous work experience. I also discussed a multidisciplinary concentration the school offers which revolves around my UG degree. I noted the lower cost of living as a benefit for someone with a family looking to find housing not only for myself, but also for a spouse and two children. I noted employment opportunities for my spouse in the area as well (Charlottesville's unemployment rate is actually quite low!).
These are just some ideas. The key, however, will be to make it personal to you and find ways to link your interest to other items already mentioned in your original application.
Anyhow, that's just my .02 cents.
ETA: I have not been admitted, so this is all speculation. Take it with a grain of salt!

I have stats that would probably amount to a WL at this point in the game, but I sent in a LOCI a few days ago touching on things in my application and some new, but not at all huge, personal information. It's more than a 'please admit me' but it's not a resume update. I feel like a short letter can't hurt, though I think so far it has really only helped people in YP situations.MAHamlin wrote: In my opinion, if you have something worth updating the school about you should send the letter. Re: UVA c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013 cycle)
That's partly why I'm hesitant. I don't think that why the numbers I'm bringing in (even as a URM) a LOCI prior to a decision will "do the trick" or make them say wow let's go ahead and admit him. But, since I believe I'm headed for a ding I was thinking why not just do it.LRGhost wrote:I have stats that would probably amount to a WL at this point in the game, but I sent in a LOCI a few days ago touching on things in my application and some new, but not at all huge, personal information.
