I mean tbh though, while the law school is heinous, I love the statue and I really love Columbia's overall campus and I think it makes up for the ugly monstrosity of a building.

Would anyone be down to get together in a chat room some time this weekend to discuss PS and diversity statement ideas/outlines?

Therefore, I am applying to a huge number of schools. Law school just became a real option at the beginning of the summer and until recently state schools were the only option I had really thought of. Now I'm trying to branch out and since I have just begun research I am applying to T25's w/ starting salary above my state schools and oos safeties, and places where I'd be cool living for 3 years (i.e. coast and southeast).

Is 25 applications just insane? Should I try to cut it down?
See how many fee waivers you can get when you get your score.
You can cut out HYS+B probably to save money.
25 does sound excessive though, but for splitters, I get that applying broadly is necessary.

Wait til you get your score back to decide where to apply.

What do you want to do / where do you want to work?

Your profile says you're from FL, so if you just want any legal job in FL, I guess FSU or UF with $$$ is ok. The only two 2Ls on TLS that I know of with Biglaw SAs in FL are from Chicago and Yale.

Idk what "starting salary" is supposed to mean. Do you understand the bimodal salary distribution for legal jobs? What are these oos safeties? Depending on the school, you'd better be comfortable living there permanently--not just for 3 years--because it may be hard to get back.
Toby Ziegler wrote:Wait til you get your score back to decide where to apply.
And this. 25 seems high. Score will help determine what you should focus on.

25 applications is insane.

Stop focusing on "state schools and oos safeties, and places where I'd be cool living for 3 years" and focus on where you want to be long-term. It makes no sense to apply to a school like UMN if you don't want to end up in Minnesota and aren't using it simply for scholarship negotiations. If you want to end up in SoCal it makes no sense to go to WUSTL, even though they're generous to splitters, over USC or UCLA. This advice is more strictly for schools outside of the T14, where many claim national placement, but few show much of it.

Focusing on starting salaries at "T25's" is meaningless because salaries are bimodal, so you'll either be making six-figures in biglaw or you'll be making a third or a quarter of that in a legal job if you manage to get one. You should be focused on the percentage placed in full-time long-term legal jobs, and the percentage placed in biglaw/fed clerkships if that's something you're shooting for.

Ding ding ding. If you don't want to be a lawyer, don't go to law school.

The trick is to not go to a school with graded legal writing.

If you go to UF, you should expect that your first job out of law school will be a government or small law firm job where you very likely won't be looking at more than 60k a year. Obviously you have a shot at BigLaw if you kill it, but it is not the likely outcome.

If you're not at a T14, starting at $65k would generally be a good outcome ITE, so I think you may need to readjust your expectations.

Do you have crazy softs relative to the average HYS students though? A 2.9 is a 2.9.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
