They are going off to Michigan or Chicago or wherever, and I don't blame a school as tiny as Cornell for deferring them. Maybe it's YP for USNWR purposes, but maybe it's also trying to admit people who will actually be likely to come.
Obviously this doesn't explain a lot of the people deferred, who are pretty square on the numbers. But the number of people for whom Cornell is not even worth banging out a quick LOCI shows that some of the deferrals were a good idea.
Exactly. In fact, some have done exactly what Cornell expected, withdrawn their application after being deferred. I think this process is good news for those who actually want to attend Cornell--as it will weed out those who consider it a backup.
Now, for those of you (which, might very well include me once they get around to making a decision on my EA app) who were deferred and actually want to attend Cornell, hang in there and show Cornell why they should admit you (through LOCIs, LORs, a VISIT if possible). It will soon become apparent to them which applicants are actually serious about attending.
In a sense, they are letting the applicants weed themselves out.

Re: Cornell waiting room
Ok, I need advice:
I'm writing out my LOCI, and I want to tell Cornell that they're my top choice (they are), except I'm still ED at Michigan. I would have gone ED at Cornell, except they obv. don't have an ED option. So of course I want to wait until I hear back from Michigan, which should be within the next week or so. Do you guys think it looks bad if I wait 2.5 weeks before sending in a LOCI? I've already notified Cornell via e-mail that I would like to remain in consideration.
Pleasepleaseplease help me out as I'm freaking out JUST A LITTLE BIT.

Not only do I think it isn't bad to wait to write the LOCI, I think it shows you (might) have thought things through before sending off an auto-LOCI. Don't worry about the lag in time - your interest in being considered with the RDs is all they care about.SilverE2 wrote:Ok, I need advice:

Now, as for this line: I'm writing out my LOCI, and I want to tell Cornell that they're my top choice (they are), except I'm still ED at Michigan. Dude, I couldn't help but chuckle at this.

Re: Cornell waiting room
My opinion? It will make no difference at all if you wait 2.5 weeks. They just got done reviewing your app, and they're now focusing on the rest of the EA pool. Even if you were to send in your LOCI tomorrow, I bet they won't even look at it until (and maybe even after) they start reviewing the non-EA pool. Judging by how things are moving at Cornell, it seems like they're not even going to move on the non-EA pool until the first of the year. If you send your LOCI by the first of January, I'm sure you'll be fine.SilverE2 wrote:Ok, I need advice:

Dear Cornell,
I would like to tell you how much I really want to go to your school, and how incredible I think it is. But, I will defer telling you such until the regular LOCI cycle, which usually doesn't occur until February or so...

Re: Cornell waiting room
Yes, I know, I keep haunting your thread... but it's a great distraction from pending exam hell...
I never wrote a LOCI. In fact, I thought I had been withdrawn, as they wanted a written "please keep me in consideration" after my deferral, and I was on the road and didn't get the request until too late (so I never wrote it.) It wasn't until I got a call from a NALSA member asking me if I was attending diversity admitted students weekend that I knew I'd been accepted.
Do what feels right for you, but don't stress. Send a LOCI when you have the time, visit if you want (although not in the next two weeks,) enjoy your life. It's only a law school, one of many. I mean, I love it here, but who is to say I wouldn't have enjoyed any other law school which accepted me?
