Does Columbia offer any merit based aid aside from the Hamilton and Butler?

Yes. You can go to lsn to see the ranges of scholarship amounts awarded in previous years.poptheballoon1 wrote:Does Columbia offer any merit based aid aside from the Hamilton and Butler?

I applied ED a while back and received a letter saying that my application would be reconsidered in April "without prejudice and with continuing recognition of [my] special interest in Columbia Law School." I've read the letter a couple times, and it does not use the words "reserve" or "hold" or "waitlist." There's also no reference to a reserve list. Is this a different letter that CLS sends to non-admitted ED applicants? What does this mean? Am I reserved?
I submitted my application without a Columbia-specific essay. I didn't think I needed one since I figured my interest would be clear based on my decision to apply ED. Should I submit a LOCI now?

I'm a RD applicant who got held in that huge wave a few weeks back, and my letter explicitly said "Your application has been placed our 'Hold' category." So I'm guessing different letter? But it sounds the same as a reserve or hold, which makes me think a LOCI would be okay to send.a2s8h wrote:I applied ED a while back and received a letter saying that my application would be reconsidered in April "without prejudice and with continuing recognition of [my] special interest in Columbia Law School." However, my hold letter did specifically say I could send a LOCI by a certain date, so I don't know if you subscribe to the same knowledge that someone recently commented with saying that if they haven't asked, they don't need it. I think personally I would still send one though since they told you they're going to revisit your application.

I don't think any LOCI would be stronger than the decision to apply ED. However, since your app was pushed to RD pool, and you may have received acceptances/scholly offers from other schools--which may sway your interest in Columbia--a LOCI would help them reassure that Columbia is still your 1st choice.a2s8h wrote:I applied ED a while back and received a letter saying that my application would be reconsidered in April "without prejudice and with continuing recognition of [my] special interest in Columbia Law School." I would call to check if they're willing to receive a LOCI from a ED/non-Hold/non-Reserve applicant though.

Ah yea that makes sense. Thank you! I'll give them a call before I get started on that LOCI.strawberrieee wrote:I don't think any LOCI would be stronger than the decision to apply ED. Interviewed end of November and still haven't heard anything. Would others simply wait this out, or attempt to show continued interest (with either an e-mail to my interviewer to check in and express interest, or a general LOCI to the main admissions site)? Anyone else in a similar boat?

I've been complete since early December and I haven't been invited to interview and I haven't heard anything whatsoever. Asking a similar question as jg61: write a LOCI or a general e-mail to let them know I still exist?

Yup, there are at least a handful of us; you can look over the last few pages to see the musing. I haven't noticed anything similar in previous years' threads, but I might've just missed it. Does seem odd though. At least one person got out of this state (many many days with absolutely no communication) with an acceptance recently. Others of us are still just waiting and wondering though. I've personally been complete with no interview for ~150 or so days, and gobears!! has been like that even longer. As far as I know no one has reached out to them to see what's going on, but it does seem likely that they're aware and still just figuring things out, so take that as you will.Loney M. I was the one (or one of the ones) who recently got in after silence since mid November, and I didn't do anything like send a LOCI, contact admissions, etc. I honestly have no insight as to what a) took so long and b) netted me an acceptance after so long.dreams2020 wrote:jg61 wrote:Interviewed end of November and still haven't heard anything. Has anyone that was Held (or anyone at all for that matter) visited Columbia as a walk-in under their open-door policy (http://web.law.columbia.edu/admissions/jd/visit)? Will be in NYC in the near future and was wondering if showing my face could help at all, or if it'd be frowned upon since I'd basically be using it as an opportunity to sell myself as a candidate, not ask any real questions about the application process.

Seems like a good thought to stop by and visit. Don't think it would be frowned upon at all... you want to get in!justakicker wrote:Has anyone that was Held (or anyone at all for that matter) visited Columbia as a walk-in under their open-door policy (http://web.law.columbia.edu/admissions/jd/visit)? Has anyone been admitted a month or more after their interview? Based on this thread it seemed like most people received some kind of decision within a month or so after their interview, and I'm starting to think I should stop obsessively running down the stairs to my mailbox every time I hear my mailman..

I went two weeks ago and the secretary at the admissions office asked me a bunch of questions concerning the purpose of my visit before letting me speak with an admissions officer. The secretary was quite clear that they would not be willing to discuss my application specifically and that it was more for answering questions/informational purposes. I think it'd be frowned upon if you used this as an opportunity to sell yourself. I went in with questions prepared instead; I still wanted them to see my face and have my name on their list of students who visited. Just in case, since you never know...justakicker wrote:Has anyone that was Held (or anyone at all for that matter) visited Columbia as a walk-in under their open-door policy (http://web.law.columbia.edu/admissions/jd/visit)? Re: Columbia C/O 2019 Applicants - 2015 - 2016
The average amount of days between interview and decision in the spreadsheets is 31, meaning that some people hear sooner and some hear later. I don't think you should be concerned. I'm at the three week mark and I've decided that once the one month mark hits I'll allow myself to get anxious, but until then most people don't hear back for about that amount of time. Question for accepted students, are most people hearing via letter before they do via email? How are most people first being admitted?matterhorn wrote:Has anyone been admitted a month or more after their interview? I think almost all (maybe all?) reported admits this cycle have first been notified via email, with a physical copy of the acceptance letter following in the mail shortly thereafter
