For those asking I'm 3.9x/173 URM in State. Not sure how much that will help you guys figure out where you stand.

Ya...taking the engineering path probably wasn't the most helpful for my GPA either. The ME department has a mandated 2.7 average across the whole major. But all of Cal's grad schools have a reputation for favoring non-Cal UG's. Something about wanting to spread alum across the country or something. Oh well! Luckily I have some other good options, just in much colder places.

The two undergrad schools on my LSAC report give average GPAs at 3.14 (public)/3.26 (private) and have almost identical HS GPA/SAT/admission rates as Berkeley - one is ever-so-slightly more competitive, the other less. When I attended 10+ years ago, I can almost guarantee those numbers were lower. Any idea what Berkeley's average UGPA is? I wouldn't imagine it could be much lower than 3.2.

That's insane and quite brutal, especially given how many smart people you're up against. I've reviewed a lot of Cal student/grad resumes (UG business-type major and MFE mostly), some really high GPAs among them, but definitely impressive kids with low 3.x.

i don't really think getting a high GPA in a lot of the social science/humanities majors at Berkeley is particular difficult. To say, for example, that Berkeley polisci department is hardly touched by grade inflation is a joke. most of my friends in polisci/sociology/psych that were somewhat intelligent and hardworking had A- averages. that said it did seem like eecs/math/etc kids had it pretty rough.

You guys are really over-exaggerating Berkeley's undergrad competitiveness. For starters, regardless of what ME's "official policy" is, there's basically no way the average is 2.7. Basically the only classes that average a B- at Berkeley are weeder math/sciences courses, and the first few classes in tough major sequences. You can look at the grade distribution and see that even in the toughest majors (ME included) the averages are basically a B, with electives being closer to B+.

Traditional "law school majors" follow a similar pattern though with higher means in general. Weed the uninterested students out with a B- average in intro math/intro to X, and then basically give a B+ average for upper div electives. Also, I'm pretty sure average undergrad GPA is around a 3.4 so its not insanely low.

Furthermore, the median student is likely much better off than the mean suggests. Looking at grade distributions the median appears to higher almost always, since the people getting D's and F's are skewing the distribution.

Given the right major, a high GPA from Berkeley is insanely doable, though its going to be really tough to accomplish this in engineering/hard sciences.

Work in customer service. Got a call to my desk from a woman enraged because we send her mailings that she believes are wasteful and shamefully not printed on recycled materials. Looked at her file...she goes to Berkeley

Berkeley's first time bar passage rates has dropped the last 4-5 years running. Not sure what this is related to. Possibly admissions policies, faculty hiring/retiring, etc.
