Should I shoot them an e-mail to see what's up, or is this kind of delay normal for early-Jan submits?
I'm in the exact same boat as you. I emailed them last week, and they responded with this:
Hi mg7, and thank you for your email. We are currently processing applications received the first week of January 2013, so it shouldn’t be too much longer before we verify your file. We appreciate your patience, and your updated status will be posted on your Online Status Page as well as in an email from us.
Keep in mind that the individual who sent this email may be using the royal "we"

According to LSN from last year, I think the majority of people hear in March.

IIRC it's because they blend need and merit. They wait for FAFSAs and all that other financial info and then make offers close to deposit deadline. In the applicant thread a couple of years ago they were flipping out because the application crash hadn't set in yet and Cornell were making decisions at and beyond other schools' deposit deadlines.

Has Cornell always been so late to release rejections? Cornell is the last of my super-reaches, and every day they delay my ding I grow more painfully optimistic.

I was on Cornell's website and all their financial aid forms are still for 2012-2013. It said they would have this years forms by mid January. I might call them tomorrow to find out when they will be updated.

The initial complete date doesn't count towards the 3-then-decision I'm pretty sure. It's the 3 updates we're looking for.

Still complete as of 1/2. Should I feel any modicum of optimism that I haven't been denied outright yet? At the upper end of LSAT, below for GPA. Or is Cornell just being cruel? App was received 11/16.

I submitted soon after you and haven't started getting status updates yet (except complete in December). I think we're still in the queue. Cornell seems to be one of the rare schools that looks at applications in the order they got them rather than prioritizing them (with some variation depending on how quickly each AdComm moves through their pile, I'm sure). Hopefully things will pick up after the application deadline passes tomorrow, but there are also some deferreds hanging on that might get in our way

Is the consensus that a decision is coming today/tomorrow?

Current Status: Verifying materials for completion
Current Status Date: 1/7/2013

Should I email admissions? Or does it normally take this long?

I submitted on 12/08 and went complete on 01/12. Unfortunately, it takes a while. I would recommend waiting till the end of next week before emailing.

So. Is Cornell's "verification process" distinct from other schools'? Could they be spending a bunch of time investigating the intricate details of our application? The received-complete delay they have just appears a little odd.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
