Is it poor form to try to winkle more money out of a school that has offered a full tuition scholarship? Books and living expenses are high, and I would rather not have to take out an assload of loans to cover them. A living/book stipend would be marvelous!
Just depends on the way you phrase the request. If you're asking for more money just to ask for more money, I think it's in poor form. I asked for a stipend last year based on superior offers already in hand. I explained to School X that I appreciated their full-tuition offer, but I had other great offers to consider (I listed one of them for good measure), and a stipend could go a long way in making my decision. Ultimately, they congratulated me on my other offers, but they denied a request for a stipend. I don't think they seemed offended whatsoever.

Has anyone had any successful stories this cycle so far? If so, what school, and how did you go about it?

Northwood, I'd love to take a look at what you ended up writing. I'm in a similar situation at the moment and am having trouble figuring out what to write. Please feel free to PM me. Thanks!

I got $45,000 from BU yesterday! Looking at past cycles on LSN, the standard for my #'s is $0, with a few lucky people getting up to $30,000. I'm so stoked!!

I basically followed the process outlined here: http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 22&t=79373

I leveraged several hefty schollys from schools ranked 19-27 and threw in the scholly from my local TTT for good measure.
Good luck!

Hey TLSers. I posted a copy of my negotiation letter in the financial aid forum, but if anyone would be willing to look at it for me, I could PM you. Thanks again.

Any thoughts about pending merit scholarships? - I have a scholarship, but it says:

6. They are listed as Pending until you remit a Merit Scholarship Deposit (or Housing Deposit). Once your deposit is received, your scholarships will be listed as Accepted.

Do you think I really need to put a deposit down, if I just want to use it to negotiate elsewhere?

i've got 35k to seton hall, full ride to st.johns and 16.5k to brooklyn-- Brooklyn is my preference of the three but that added debt is a killer. Does anyone have any advice on how to negotiate Brooklyn up? and what could i possibly hope for with my stats.

Loyola told me I have the "max amount they offer" for scholarships. Miami, in short, told me they're out of scholarship money at this point. I won't be going to either one though, so hopefully that will free up some money for them.

Can't you say that school ABC offered you a merit scholarship? I mean, technically, unless the school can revoke a scholarship for no other reason than you not going ot the school, aren't all scholarships initially offered considered to be pending? I would use it to negotiate.

No you absolutely do not need to put down a deposit in order to negotiate. All merit scholarship offers are "pending" until you deposit and accept them.

To answer a previous poster, for what its worth I had no luck negotiating with Seton Hall. I visited twice, met the dean of enrollment, and wrote (what I thought to be) a sincere request for an increase. I was also fielding full tuition offers from St. Johns and Hofstra as well as competitive money from Brooklyn. Needless to say, Seton Hall held at 35,000. I was a little taken aback by this, as I viewed St. Johns and, to an extent, Hofstra as peer schools. The recent US News rankings say otherwise, however, as St Johns plummeted back to 95, Hofstra increased to 84, but SHU took a big jump to 61 to surpass both Rutgers campuses and Brooklyn.
