I'm right there hoping with you! I've been UR since 12/19 - GPA is slightly below median and I'm only slightly above median LSAT (not expecting much with my stats, but holding out hope). I did grow up in Seattle and still have strong ties - whole family lives around the region. It would be a personal point of pride to be accepted, even if I didn't get a financial package that would make feasible.

I don't have much of an idea if it gives you chance of admission, but would assume it gives better opportunity for money? I think schools want to take students who they believe won't just up and leave right after graduation, hence having ties to the region could work in one's favor. At the end of the day, UW is primarily concerned with scores (stronger desire for higher GPAs, or so I hear), so if you have the stats you shouldn't worry. Plus, once you live in Seattle you'll never want to leave anyway, so they don't have much to worry about.

They're in a unique position where Seattle is such a desirable place to live that I believe they don't need to offer as much financial incentive as other schools in less glamorous cities. As I said, I have low expectations about admission, let alone getting aid if I do get in, but it would round out my application cycle nicely if I were to be accepted.

Were you an officer? I used all but one year's worth of Post 9/11 on my undergrad. So my 1L year is covered. Also going after Vocational Rehabilitation as well.

Oh yes, UW is notoriously hard to get merit-based aid from. They're in a unique position where Seattle is such a desirable place to live that I believe they don't need to offer as much financial incentive as other schools in less glamorous cities. As I said, I have low expectations about admission, let alone getting aid if I do get in, but it would round out my application cycle nicely if I were to be accepted.

The reason for giving less aid is simply because there isn't a ton to give. As part of a public university, UW is not allowed to do what most private law schools do for "scholarships," which are simply tuition discounts in most cases. In other words, a private school gives you a "scholarship" of $20k, but there's no new revenue for them: they're just charging you less. They can offset the revenue loss by charging someone else more (i.e., sticker). UW, by contrast, must have dollar-for-dollar a revenue source to cover the full cost of tuition for an in-state (or out-of-state) student in order to meet its budget set by the Board of Regents, which is audited by the state.

I understand this argument, but I don't think it explains why UW gives less aid relative to other public law schools. Schools like ASU, UC Davis, and UCLA are all public and offer great scholarships. I think the explanation may be that UW focuses less on an applicant's numbers, and more on things like financial need/public interest involvement/diversity than do other top public law schools. I'm sure they have a decent amount of funds, but it seems like they have a different approach to allocation.

I'm sure they have a decent amount of funds, but it seems like they have a different approach to allocation.

They do care about those other things, but those other things don't change the raw amount of money available, which isn't very high. Trust me, my fellow classmates and I would say otherwise if there were abundant funds, because you can rest assured those scholarship funds would be distributed aggressively to bring in admits.

There isn't some kind of magical explanation for why UW gives less money. It's pretty simple: there is less money. The causes as to why there is less money could be myriad, as compared to the public schools you mentioned, whether it's alumni donations or adequate state support, or the university itself allocating more money to the law school, or any number of things, individually or together.

Your theories are interesting. However, if UW truly does have less money to give than other public law schools, as you purport, then I would be interested in knowing the actual reason why.

Only insofar as your ties would show you want to be at UW for reasons that make sense. What I've observed in my own experience and others is that the big question successful applicants answer well is "why UW." That could be ties, desire to live here, interest in specific research areas or programs offered at UW Law, or many other reasons. Ties aren't the only way to show that, and many people come here with them and without them.

Cheers. I guess that was the point I was trying to make - ties are a good way to show that you want to be in Seattle and that you aren't going to up and leave. Entirely possible to show it in other ways, but "ties" are a very easy way to make your "why UW" argument, IMO.
