You guys should really set up your Class of 2019 FB page now; you can't join the official UCI Law FB page until you're officially enrolled. We (class of 2018) still use our page extensively. In fact, we probably use it more now than we did before school started. If you're freaked out about it for some reason, I'm happy to make one for you, but you really should have a 1L as an admin.zot1 wrote:Gotcha. If someone makes one, please post it here.crystallize wrote:I don't think there's one yetzot1 wrote:Have you guys created a Facebook group? A non-TLS admitted student is asking me about it. Thanks!
In case you're thinking about it, you can use a Facebook page to discuss your options more and to make plans around ASW if some of you want to meet outside the planned activities.

Does UCI have a "preferred" or some kind of special waitlist, or is it just one list of equal candidates? Also any info of coming off the waitlist?

I was told they don't start looking at the waitlist until May.

Go to ASW, its worth it. We look forward to meeting you guys. Also fwiw talked with the Dean recently and he expects us to be ranked around mid 20's next year. Its cool to see the improvement. Last year at ASW he expected us to move up a couple of spots and we did. Its not guaranteed or anything but its fun to hear that more people are becoming familiar with the work UCI is doing. Just wanted to pass that along.

I stayed at a pretty nice one in Newport that was off their suggested list. I think it was about $120. Might be able to find something for 100, but cheaper than that would be difficult. If you articulate the distance necessarily travelled, you might get them up to a 500 travel stipend.forlornhope wrote:Do any locals have recommendations for the ASW? The $350 reimbursement is a pittance compared to the costs I'm starting to add up in my estimates since it will be a Thursday-Sunday trip (which happens to the worst time for air-fare).

3L. If you want something affordable, Id recommend courtyard on main Street in Irvine or Hotel Irvine (it's across the street. It's run by the company that owns most of the property in Irvine. The hotel used to be a Hyatt I believe). They are two of the closest hotels to campus.Zotty11 wrote:I stayed at a pretty nice one in Newport that was off their suggested list. Re: UC Irvine Law c/o 2019 Applicants (2015-2016)
Hey all! Admitted back in November GPA>75% LSAT=25%, unique softs, excellent undergrad institution. Wondering, has anyone had success negotiating scholarships. They must put a lot of emphasis on LSAT because I feel low balled compared to other offers. Problem is the offers I had were last year ( I had to withdraw due to personal circumstances). I made the mistake of not reapplying to similarly ranked schools that I lost interest in and I hadn't thought to use for negotiating. I honestly thought Irvine would've offered more. Anyway I do have one school offering me 75% + need but it is ranked 20 spots lower and is in a different state. Do you think Irvine would consider upping any? I genuinely am interested in the other school because of the $$. Any thoughts let me know!! And good luck to everyone!

Judging by the UC Davis thread, it sounds like UCI is offering a lot less money than its competition so far this cycle.. or maybe it's just spreading it thinner? I sent a negotiation request and they said they're going to review their scholarship allocation in the next couple of weeks so it can't hurt to ask!Roosevelt wrote:Hey all! Don't know for sure but I know apps are way up. Thus, yield management might be a little different than in previous years, so hang in there! I imagine they waitlisted a lot more people this cycle for fear of over enrollment. For this reason, its possible they reach into the waitlist this year more than in years past. I really think they don't want to enroll over 150 this year in effort to keep the student-faculty ratio low.
Other updates:
(1) 1L's just signed up for mandatory clinics for the following year (must do in order to graduate). Its kind of cool you listen to a seminar about the process then speak with prior students enrolled in each clinic to get an idea about whether or not you would like to pursue further. Additionally, students get assigned one core pro-bono project with a supervisor in their 1L year. Tons of opportunities for experiential, faculty-guided pro bono work.
(2) A friend on PILF told me that all students who qualify and who are working unpaid public interest jobs during the summer will be paid over 3k in a summer stipend from school raised funds. UCI is super committed to PI and is willing to actually get you some experience and connections.

I can't speak to this cycle, but they were extremely reticent to negotiate last year. Given that applications are up something like 40% this year folliwng the USNWR ranking, I'd guess they're probably even less likely. That said, it can't hurt to try. I was able to negotiate a bump last year, but it was hard fought and I had a lot of incentive to go to another school so it was an honest negotiation with lots of back and forth (not just "hey, any chance you can give me more money.")Roosevelt wrote:Hey all! Yeah me too. One thing I found was that if you negotiate after other schools require deposits you are more likely to be taken serious. Dont give up after one attempt. I recommend being courteous and respectful, but keep making your case for more money. However, sometimes they just max out and there is nothing more to be done. Also, if you go to ASW or visit they are more likely to take your interest as genuine. I raised my scholarship twice at specific points where I felt the opportunity was ripe. If they weren't budging I would back off and wait for another time.spencercross wrote:I can't speak to this cycle, but they were extremely reticent to negotiate last year. Thanks! Also as far as housing goes, what do you all think of Verano Place vs. Palo Verde? Are either worth checking out? I've heard bad things (bad construction, domestic disputes, overall outdated) but for the price... in the area especially....they don't seem that bad. Any thoughts?Zotty11 wrote:Yeah me too.
