There was a notorious RBG photo booth today at my school. I kid you not. Props included gavels, robes, glasses, crowns, and necklaces. Of course, I went to get my picture taken

I get sort of annoyed at languages like Spanish, in which a group with both males and females automatically assumes the masculine form.slippin_jimmy wrote:Ahaha that's so funny yet not.jettison63 wrote:Thought this thread would appreciate the following story. Had my Spanish lesson the other day on my lunch break. Learned how to say things like:
-When newlyweds get married, the wife looks for her husband's clothes at the department store.
-When people are nervous, they take valium.
-When the lady of the house can't get a stain out, she buys stain remover.
Yes, the book is very, very dated

That is also why I have recently embraced y'all instead of the more common "you guys".

Dress/blazer combo is my favorite power outfit.slippin_jimmy wrote:We also just got an e-mail at my work re: a volunteer event and the organizer was like 'suits are fine' but I don't wear a suit to work on a normal day. Most of the volunteers and the organizer are male tho. So I plan to rock a dress/blazer combo.

+1
When I was studying in NYC a well-known consulting firm had a cupcake decorating recruitment for event just for women. ha
And an organization that was trying to be about women's empowerment had an event to help women unwind from the stress of dating in NY and wearing heels all the time. Because you know...we don't have careers to worry about or anything. The most stressful part of my day is definitely picking out my clothes and managing my social calendar.
Is all I have to say about that.
Though, to be fair, I love cupcakes.

Yes! It irks me as well. I also always felt like I was wasting brain space by memorizing genders to go along with words.barley wrote: I get sort of annoyed at languages like Spanish, in which a group with both males and females automatically assumes the masculine form.![]()

To my Italian teacher's credit, though, he taught us the rule and then immediately acknowledged the ridiculousness (e.g. a group of 999 females and 1 male -> male pronoun).

Oh wow, I didn't know that! Go you.Hildegard15 wrote: One of my spanish professors my senior year mentioned that they changed it officially. Now if its a majority female, you switch to the feminine. Even if that's not true I've still been referring to my team as "las asistentes" since there's only one guy among us.
